Anxiety in Children: How Can We Help?

By Genevieve Cunningham

Anxiety is a rampant problem in our modern society. It seems as though more people than ever before are suffering from some kind of anxiety. We're stressed and overwhelmed, and it's definitely showing. But perhaps even more concerning, the effects of our busy world are also showing up in our children with more kids than ever before showing signs of anxiety. So what can we do to help our youngest members of society? If you want to help your kids lower and manage their anxiety, take a look at these tips to help them starting right now.

We Can Set Routines

Kids do better with routines. They do better when they know what to expect and what's coming next. When we don't have set routines, it can really contribute to a child's anxiety. But this works in reverse as well. If our children are suffering anxiety, we can make sure their routines are in order, which may then reduce their anxiety. Routines work well in the morning, after school, and at bedtime. Give your kids some stability, and it may lower their overall anxiety about life.

We Can Lower Certain Expectations

High expectations can be good. Our children need to know that we expect their best effort, respect for others, and general good behavior. But if we set expectations too high, we can set our children up for even more anxiety. Let your kids know that they don't have to be perfect. It's OK to make an occasional bad grade. It's OK to make mistakes. It's OK to struggle. If your children know that they have a safe place at home, they may be able to put their anxiety aside and relax.

We Can Teach Them Coping Habits

One of the best things we can do for a child with anxiety is to teach them how to manage it. It's possible that they'll have struggles with anxiety for their whole lives. But if we teach them how to cope, we can help them avoid serious problems. Do some research or talk to a professional about how to help your child deal with the anxiety. As they learn the proper techniques to manage, they'll subsequently improve their mental health for the long haul.

Anxiety is a common and frustrating problem. And for kids, it can cause serious damage to their future lives. Use these tips to help your kids manage their anxiety, and you'll be setting them up for better health both now and long into the future.
