Subluxations Cause Problems Chiropractic Can Help
By Paul Rothbart
Injuries cause pain. Everyone knows that. It may be slight or severe, but you generally are going to hurt somewhere. Many injuries are obvious and you know you need medical care. But some are more subtle. You may be experiencing pain but have no idea why. One of these types of injury is subluxation, or a "misalignment." They can occur in the spine or any of the joints and it doesn't take major trauma to cause one. Subluxations can cause pain throughout the body as well as limit mobility. Treating subluxations requires locating them and then fixing them. Your best option for this may be a chiropractor.
Kinds of Subluxations
There are different types of subluxations depending upon where they occur. One of the most common is a vertebral subluxation in which the spine becomes restricted, and is often referred to as "misaligned." This can be caused by trauma to the back such as a hard fall or can happen over time due to poor posture or overworking the back. There are also shoulder subluxations in which the top of the upper arm partially dislodges from the socket. These happen because of overuse in activities that use upper arm motions such as swimming or tennis. Elbows and knees often become subluxation due to a fall.
Symptoms of a Subluxation
There are several symptoms that may indicate you have a subluxation. The most obvious one is pain in the affected area. There may also be swelling and redness. You may also feel numbness or tingling. With a vertebral subluxation, this may occur in another part of the body due to pressure on the spinal cord. A common symptom for joint subluxations is a loss of the range of motion in the joint. There may also be bruising. Any combination of these symptoms could indicate a subluxation and you should seek help.
Seeing a Chiropractor
Subluxations are one of the things chiropractors do best. By performing an examination, your chiropractor can locate the exact area of the problem. Once the subluxation is pinpointed, it can be fixed with an adjustment. This can relieve your pain and other symptoms and restore your full range of motion. The chiropractor can also offer advice on how to avoid future subluxations.
