De-Stress with these Anxiety-Fighting Tips

By Sara Butler

It's common to have the jitters before a big job interview or a first date, but there are many people that deal with anxiety on a daily basis. This anxiety can disrupt life and have a negative impact on their ability to connect with other people. The Anxiety and Depression Association of America claims that 40 million American adults are impacted by anxiety disorders. If you're one of them, then you may want to give a few of these tips a try to help you manage your anxiety and battle back against stress.

Get Moving

Regular exercise is great for your overall health -- and mental health too. When you exercise, your body releases natural feel-good chemicals that help to improve mood and regulate your sleep. You should shoot for at least 30 minutes of moderate level exercise most days of the week.

Get Some Sleep

When you sleep at night, your body uses that time to restore and rejuvenate. If you're not getting at least seven to nine hours of sleep per night, then it's time to take a look at your routine. Make sure to turn off all electronics at least an hour before bed and do something that helps you relax and prepare to tuck yourself in for a good night's rest.

Watch Your Diet

Food can function as medicine to help keep your body working optimally, so ensure you're eating a balanced diet. Try to limit alcohol and caffeine as you eat fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.

Take Breaks

You can keep your mind clear and lower anxiety as you control stress by setting aside time each day to simply take a break. Whenever something stresses you out, listen to your favorite tunes or some deep breathing exercises or meditation to help you take back control.

Monitor Feelings

If you feel your anxiety is out of control, then keep a diary to record your symptoms and help you keep track of signs you may have an anxiety disorder. These symptoms include:

  • Nightmares
  • Panic attacks
  • Worrying constantly
  • Avoidance of social situations

If you're worried about your anxiety and changes to your routine don't do the trick, then talk to a trusted medical professional about possible treatment. You don't have to add to the stress in your life by doing it alone, so reach out for help today.
