Video Games Can Benefit Your Health If You Let Them

By Brandi Goodman

Many people like to say that video games are bad for you. TV and games rot your brain, some say. Though there could be instances where too much game playing can affect your behavior, there are several benefits to them as well. Video games can in fact benefit your health if you let them.

Choose Learning Games

Lots of learning games exist. These are some of the best to play because they really have you using your mind. Games such as Big Brain Academy have you doing number sequences, matching things, remembering things after they've been removed from the screen, and doing math. Word games that have you connecting words, making new words, or reading lots are also beneficial. They'll help you to expand your mind and improve your brain health and memory.

Play With Friends

Playing a game alone can get boring after a while, but playing with friends offers lots of advantages. You can improve your social skills as you and your friends or even family get together for a game night. You don't have to stick to board games, either. Multiplayer video games exist that can give you some friendly competition. Race against each other in a racing challenge, for example. You can also play games that allow you to work together as a team.

Playing online is also an option. You can speak with people across the world and get to know some different people. You may find it easier to make friends this way than in person at times, which can also help with social interaction if you don't otherwise get it.

De-Stress

Video games can be great for stress. If you're overwhelmed at work or even at home, you can get on your game system and unwind. Getting out of your own world and into the world on your screen can help you to put your mind at ease. You'll be focusing on trying to win at the game you're playing instead of focusing on what's bothering you. Just don't spend all day doing it. Play for a while and then shut off the system so you aren't getting tech neck or remaining sedentary.

Video games can be great for your health if you let them. Make sure you're changing things up from time to time though. Play on your own or with friends or family. Choose learning games sometimes. You want to de-stress and have fun while still bettering your well-being.
