Rain and Snow Tips From the Chiropractor

By Brandi Goodman

The winter season brings both rain and snow in many states throughout the U.S. Maryland is one of them. It's important to take extra precautions in this type of weather that can lead to slips and injuries easily. With some rain and snow tips from the chiropractor, you'll be better able to maintain your balance no matter how the weather is outside.

Stay Inside

One of the best things you can do when it's cold or wet outside is to just stay indoors. The cold can be quite bothersome to your joints and the wetness can cause slips you want to avoid. Of course, that's not always possible. When you do have to go outside, be sure to watch your step and drive carefully. It's also imperative that you stay bundled up and warm to avoid some of the joint discomforts that are possible with the cold season.

Wear the Right Shoes

A little rain is all it takes to make the ground slippery and cause you to be unbalanced on your feet. Add snow to the mix with ice underneath, and you'll have an even harder time staying upright. Wear the right shoes and you can help combat the slipperiness the cold weather brings. Never wear high heels or basic flats outdoors. Instead, you should have a sturdy pair of rain or snow boots with traction that can help give you a good grip.

Shovel Carefully

The more snow you have, the more time you'll have to spend shoveling. You need to do so carefully. Don't grab a shovel full of snow. It can weigh more than you think if it's all packed in and add more weight than needed for your shoulders, arms, and back to handle. You should also be sure not to bend at your waist when lifting your tool, and do not twist your back as you attempt to thrust the snow into the nearest pile.

Rain and snow can bring a lot of fun for some. Jumping in puddles and sledding down hills are two common activities when it's cold out. The season can also bring pain and injury, though. Follow some chiropractic tips and stay as safe as possible when the weather is less than ideal for most circumstances. If you do experience discomfort, stop in at The Joint Chiropractic for an assessment. You may need to be adjusted to better your well-being this winter.
