When Sciatica Flares, Your Chiropractor May Help
When sciatica flares, the pain usually demands relief, and dominates the situation. The people that I have known who ran into sciatica, responded immediately to solve it with the help of their chiropractors.
One woman went from running her own business and enjoying a busy social life, to a standstill situation as she sought relief. Her family and friends were stunned by the change, and took turns helping her navigate her way through treatment and back to a normal routine.
Another fellow was in his sixties, just beginning to enjoy his retirement. He was an active walker, camper and gardener. He also found himself focusing almost completely on the problem, as the pain became a real issue.
He soon found himself having more pain, and was unable to drive. His wife began taking him to the chiropractor, and over a period of time he worked his way back. Later he was able to go for walks with his dog, drive, garden and play with his grandkids.
So What Is Sciatica?
The American Chiropractic Association says sciatica is actually a symptom of irritation of the nerve root, and it may stem from wear and tear on the lower back. Relentless pain runs down the lower back through the buttock into the lower leg producing tingling, dull aches, burning sensations, pins and needles pain, toe or foot pain and numbness or muscle weakness. Pain can start slowly and then intensify
The best advice may be to seek treatment right away when sciatica flares, and to take good care of your back to avoid it.
ACS Tips To Avoid Sciatica
Eat a healthy diet and maintain a good weight and regular exercise routine. Use good posture and avoid inactivity or bed rest. Always use good safety measures when lifting and if you smoke, quit.
Visiting the Chiropractor
If you see the chiropractor for sciatica, the visit will begin with a complete medical history and discussion of when the pain began and what causes it to flare. There will be a spinal adjustment to seek pain relief and evaluate spinal health.
The chiropractor may ask you to lift your legs straight up, one at a time. The chiropractor’s goal will be to help restore spinal movement, improve function and decrease pain and inflammation without pain medications or surgery. Cold/heat treatments, spinal adjustments and rehabilitative exercises may be used as visits evolve and treatment gets underway.
Both of the cases of sciatica that I saw were fairly dramatic, but achieved good solutions. If you or someone in your family has encountered sciatica symptoms, do not ignore them. Get treatment promptly.
