Calling All Birds!

By Donna Stark

If you are looking for something new to do that will help pass the time and get you outdoors, why don't you go on a scavenger hunt? A scavenger hunt that will lead you to some of the most beautiful things you have seen in a very long time, that is. This scavenger hunt is something that can be done anywhere, is appropriate for all ages, and except for a good pair of binoculars, is basically free! Sound interesting to you? Well, if it does, let's go! After all, birds of a feather should always flock together.

Bird-Watching for Beginners

Bird-watching is the adult version of a child's scavenger hunt. For the hard-core enthusiasts, a little bit of travel may be required, but the truth is, you don't have to travel far at all to catch a glimpse of the awesome beauty that is flying all around you. You can simply head out your front door for a taste of it! Here are some tips on how to get started with this new hobby of yours.

  • Do your research - Understandably, you would like to see the most unique and prettiest birds but many can only be found in the far corners of the world, so don't set yourself up for disappointment. Do your research and know what you can expect to find in the trees around your neighborhood. Purchasing a field guide with pictures and maps can give you a lot of guidance when you are ready to start.
  • Choose your gear - One of the best things about bird-watching is that it doesn't require much equipment at all. As long as you have a good pair of walking shoes, a field guide (which you can purchase at your local bookstore), and a set of binoculars, you are good to go! Choose your binoculars carefully though. They don't need to be top of the line but they should at least include some basic zooming functions.
  • Finding "the one" - Page through your field guide and select the bird that you want to go find. Stay focused and don't get distracted with all the other birds you may see while exploring. The excitement that finally hits when you spot your first bird is often as intense as the thrill that comes with the hunt. It's definitely not something that you will soon forget!

Bird-watching for Good Fun and Great Health

Bird-watching is a great hobby for the entire family to start! In addition to being a ton of fun for all involved, it's also a great way to get some outdoor exercise in! So take advantage of the spring weather and head outdoors. It's time to find some birds!
