Finding That Perfect Yoga Mat

I don't know about you, but I love taking that first step into the yoga studio. The overwhelming sense of calm that washes over me is immediate, the scented candles staggered around the room encourage me to start breathing deeply, and the dimly lit studio I head into couldn't be more inviting. It's a safe, warm space that evokes the highest level of serenity, and really, isn't that what we typically think of when yoga comes to mind? So it's funny to me when I see people experiencing the exact opposite when the time comes to purchase their yoga mat.

Stress-Free Mat Shopping

Excited to embark on this new journey in their lives, it's no wonder that so many panic and stress over finding the perfect mat. And although there is certainly a lot to consider, yoga mat shopping doesn't need to cause so much anxiety in your life. So keep the beads of sweat from falling off your brows and look at this for what it is ... a stress-free way to optimal health. Here are some tips for finding that perfect mat.

  • Stay within your budget - You certainly don't want to add extra financial stress when you are purchasing those items that are supposed to help reduce your stress, so stay within your budget. You can always upgrade after becoming more experienced and committed to this form of exercise.
  • Know how you sweat - If you know that you sweat a lot, a mat that has more traction may be the better choice. Of course, you can always just buy an extra towel to place on top as well.  
  • Select the right size - It's never any fun when the majority of your body is on the hard floor because the mat you purchased is too small, so make sure it is the right size for your height. The key here is to be comfortable and safe, and a wrong-sized mat can potentially lead to unsafe alignments during poses.
  • Choose inspiration - Unless you exercise with your eyes closed, you will want to find a mat that inspires you and brings you happiness. Choose a mat with a pleasing design or calming color, something that will enhance your time at the studio.

Finding the Perfect Mat

Stop spending more time adjusting your mat than holding your poses and don't let a poor mat choice distract you from your goals. Take the time to choose your purchase well, but don't stress over it! Because whether you head on out to your local yoga studio or you create your own meditative space at home, stress does not belong in yoga.
