Reducing Holiday Stress in Children
By Donna Stark
What is normally already a time of high stress during the year, has only been made worse with the present state of the world right now. Stress levels are through the roof and for many, the joy and peace that typically come during the holiday season have yet to be found. It's no wonder that so many people are ready to break, but guess what. Adults aren't the only ones struggling to get by. Our children may be feeling the same way too.
Reducing Stress in Children
Sure, the stress bearing down on our children is not the same type of stress bearing down on us, but nonetheless, they are feeling it. And they are feeling yours too. But as much as we wish the joyful holiday season could just take it all away, we know that probably won't occur. So, instead, it's up to us to help our kids find some peace. Here are some suggestions on how you can help reduce your children's stress levels so they can end the year on a more positive note.
- Maintain routines - As difficult as it may be right now, one of the most important things you can do to maintain stability in your children's lives is to have them stick to a routine. Make sure they are going to bed and waking up at the same time every day and be consistent with the rules and their chores at home.
- Focus on a healthy diet - Even if you aren't hopping from one holiday event to the next this year that doesn't mean there won't be extra sweets and goodies sitting around the house. So, to counteract the effect those delectable treats will have on their body, fill your children's days with nutrient-dense meals.
- Stay active - One of the most effective ways to reduce stress and improve moods is to exercise, and since everyone is home right now, there isn't a better time to start those family workouts! Turn the TV off, put those video games away, and head outdoors. The fresh air will do everyone some good.
- Nurture connections - Many of us have been cut off from the ones we love so it is especially important right now to nurture the relationships in your children's lives as much as possible. Come up with creative ideas on how they can reach out to loved ones and plan some family nights in. You may even be surprised by how impactful these actions can be.
Finding Peace and Joy
Filling your home with light, love, and laughter is the best way to lift everyone's spirit and will help the entire family usher in the new year with smiles on their faces. Let's lose the stress and get through this year together!
