Driving Tips to Follow During the Holiday Season

By Brandi Swieter

Whether a family is crossing state lines for the holidays or driving to a few different family members' houses in town, there are some precautions to take to ensure the trip goes smoothly. No matter the distance, it’s easy for people to get stiff and sore from sitting in a vehicle, leading to back pain and the need for chiropractic care. Follow a few driving tips during the holiday season and any other time to avoid pain and make the ride comfortable.

Use a Back Pillow

Back pillows offer lumbar support and help keep the back from getting stiff during a long drive. Drivers can purchase one of these and keep them in their cars for everyday use if they desire. A memory foam option may be best as it helps to contour to the back so it does not feel rigid.

Take Items Out of the Back Pocket

Men in particular seem to drive with items still kept in their back pockets. Phones and wallets are two of the most commonly found things, left to make a bulge that can put the body just enough out of whack to make a long car trip uncomfortable. These items should get removed before any driving takes place, ensuring an even seat that will allow the body to be in the optimal position.

Use a Seat Cushion

Just as a lumbar support back pillow can get placed behind the back, a cushion can also get placed on the seat for a driver to ensure they’re sitting upright. An uneven seat or slouching to one side can lead to pain after just a short time. The cushion may be necessary, especially for those on the shorter side to be sure their bodies remain in the ideal position while driving in comparison to the foot pedals and steering wheel.

Adjust Mirrors First and Seats Second

The mirrors should get adjusted properly with the person sitting fully upright in the position. If the seats need to get adjusted afterward to be sure they have the right height, then that can be done. Always be sure to keep the mirrors in this exact position and do not move them again to avoid slouching.

With these driving tips in mind, anyone heading out during the holiday season can keep their back as pain-free as possible. Those who do experience pain or discomfort should seek the guidance of a doctor at The Joint Chiropractic. An adjustment may help to alleviate aches and ensure the body can continue to handle all the driving that will inevitably be needed hereafter.
