Improving Liver Health with Food

By Brandi Swieter

During Liver Cancer Awareness month, and every month thereafter, people should be focusing on their liver health. The liver is necessary for breaking down fat and producing energy, as well as clotting the blood and working out other metabolic processes. Keeping the liver healthy is vital, and it all starts with the right foods.

Broccoli

Broccoli has a special cancer-fighting compound, called sulforaphane, that has been linked to reducing other cancers in the past. The vegetable is typically said to ward off breast, colon, and prostate cancer. Now, studies have shown that broccoli can be used for liver cancer as well. It offers lots of fiber and antioxidants, each of which is necessary for keeping the liver healthy and maintained.

Spinach

Leafy greens, such as spinach, contain powerful antioxidants. Known as glutathione, this compound helps to protect the liver and keep it working as intended. Spinach can be enjoyed as a base for salad, in sandwiches, or eaten plain.

Carrots

With lots of beta-carotene, carrots have the antioxidant abilities to fight off certain cancers and improve overall health. Due as well to the Vitamin A content, carrots are able to prevent liver cancer and keep the system functioning well. Liver disease can also be stopped. Fewer toxins in the digestive tract due to these antioxidants and vitamins means the liver can continue cleansing the body's blood without extra interruptions.

Apples

Pectin, which is found in apples, helps the body cleanse itself of toxins. With these toxins removed, the liver is free to continue its job of keeping the blood clean and healthy. If too many harmful chemicals back up the digestive tract, then the liver struggles and becomes diseased. Apples also contain lots of vitamins and minerals, which are also beneficial to overall health and fighting off infection.

Garlic

Activating certain enzymes can help to flush out toxins. Garlic is capable of doing this, which will help the liver work as intended. It also cleanses the liver due to the abundance of selenium, allicin, and arginine found within it. These compounds contain antioxidants necessary for freeing the body's systems from harmful chemicals and keeping the functioning without worry.

The body needs a healthy liver to remain healthy overall. A poor working liver can cause other areas of the body to stop functioning as intended, causing illness, disease, and even cancer. Maintain a healthy liver through a healthy diet and improve overall well-being.
