How to Enjoy Chips in a Healthier Way

By Brandi Goodman

National Potato Chip Day arrives in the middle of March. This popular snack really shouldn't be consumed as often as it is. Most offerings contain far too much sodium and high calories. However, you can enjoy chips in a healthy way as long as you know what to look for on the nutrition label or how to create your own version at home.

Check the Label

Some brands have created healthier chip versions that are OK to eat on occasion. Veggie chips are one option. These are typically made with sweet potatoes instead of regular potatoes. Some even use carrots or beets or a mixture of other beneficial vegetables. These choices are high in fiber and offer protein as well.

Go for an Oven-Baked Version

Oven-baked foods are often healthier to consume than fried versions. Find some oven-baked chips at the store if you want to enjoy potato chips on this national day or any other time you have a salty craving. You may see the terms oven-baked, baked, and kettle cooked on the label to indicate a healthier chip solution. These have less fat and calories.

Stick to the Serving Size

Part of the problem with eating chips is that people like to sit and eat a ton at once. They go far beyond the suggested serving size and eat even more calories than they should. Sticking to the serving size allows you to enjoy a snack you like without having to feel guilty for doing so.

Bake Your Own Chips

Homestyle potato chips can be just as tasty as the ones you find on store shelves. You just need to find the right seasonings and ingredients. Use sweet potatoes for a healthier version. Baking them on a tray is the best solution. You never want to fry them in vegetable oil that adds to the fat content. Use a light coating of virgin olive oil and a couple of seasonings, such as chili powder and a bit of sea salt, to enhance the flavor.

Chips are a popular snack choice that many don't want to give up. You no longer have to. Just be sure to choose a healthier version that contains less calories, sodium, and fat and stick to the serving size. It satisfies your salty craving without interfering with your health.
