Keep Pain at Bay While Boating

By Brandi Goodman

Boating provides a great way to enjoy the summer. You're out on the water with the sun shining around you. You can step back on land feeling less than ideal, however, if you haven't taken the proper precautions. Boating can leave you feeling pained if you aren't careful, so keep pain at bay with some tips in mind.

Stretch

You need to stretch out your joints and prepare them for the adventure you're about to embark on. The waves crashing against the boat will have your body rocking and leave you sore if you aren't prepared. Stretch before you head out and again while you're on the water so you can keep yourself limber and stable.

Drink Plenty of Water

Your joints need more than a good stretching. They need to stay lubricated as well if you want them to function well. This means drinking plenty of water while you're out on the water. Bring some bottles with you and make sure you're drinking enough to keep your body hydrated.

Wear Non-Slip Shoes

It can be easy to slip while you're on a boat because of the water that will undoubtedly get inside. Having non-slip shoes on can help to prevent a fall -- and therefore pain. Skip the flip-flops and shoes some water shoes instead. They have a rubber bottom with grips and are designed for water. You won't be slipping easily with those kinds of shoes on your feet.

Purchase Stadium Seats

Stadium seats are usually intended for the stands. They come in handy when you're watching a game from the bleachers and need some back support. These seats can be used on a boat as well. You don't want a small bucket seat that doesn't come up to your back at all. You'll be likely to hunch over or sit slouched, leaving you with severe back pain. A stadium seat that can give you some lumbar support is a better option.

Strengthen Your Back

If you know you'll be spending any time on a boat this summer, it's time to start strengthening your back now. Some simple back exercises can go in a long way toward making your spine strong and stable. It will help you to stay upright when you're being bumped around on a boat, reducing your chance for pain.

Boating can be lots of fun, but it can also be painful. Take some precautions so you can be sure to have a fun boating adventure that leaves you feeling refreshed and not sore. You'll thank yourself later.
