What a Good Laugh Can Do for Your Day

By Sandy Schroeder

As work spins ahead in the midst of a chaotic world, some of us are at work, some of us are working at home, and others are helping wherever they can with friends and family.

If you are dealing with work, you may find it a bit hard to relax and stay focused in the midst of everything.

Dr. Travis Bradberry, co-founder of TalentSmart.com, which serves 75 percent of the Fortune 500 companies, took a look at the situation and suggested everyone consider the value of humor.

Workers are all individuals and work situations vary, but here are some of the benefits of humor that might help us all.

Humor can give us resilience - Laughter helps us relax the body and the brain. When we share a laugh with another worker, things may seem a little easier. Bouncing back becomes a little easier as we bond with those around us.

Humor can absorb some of the stress - Often tension just continues to build when we are trying to hold everything together. Taking a moment to relax and laugh together can make all of the difference as we loosen up a little.

Humor can reveal support - Sometimes in the midst of a crisis it is easy to feel alone. Pausing a moment to talk with co-workers and laugh a little can remind us that we have a support group at work and at home.

Humor reminds us of who we are - Taking the lead to reach out to another worker to help them, talk with them or share a little humor can do amazing things. We may all be struggling with the daily issues, and pausing to connect can add a needed boost.

Humor can create stability - Keeping a perspective that allows time to pause to talk and laugh can give each of us added power to calm down and stay focused.

Humor can inspire us - When we relax and laugh a little, we may open the door to everything else. If you have extra time, put it to good use with some creative brainstorming.

Humor links to gratitude - If we take time to laugh, we may also take time to look around and see just how much we have to be thankful for. Friends, family, home and work are all there to be recognized. Reach out and tell others just how much they are appreciated.
