Morning and Evening Exercise Dividends

If you love to get up early and jog around the block, or go for a leisurely walk after dinner, you may be on track to get the most out of your fitness routines, according to recent research.

Drs. Mehmet Oz and Mike Roizen took a look at recent Danish research that focused on the benefits of morning and evening exercise. They found both have advantages.

Early Bird Exercise Benefits

The researchers found exercise that happens early in the day boosts the capabilities of muscle cells to handle fat and sugar, helping to control the body's glucose levels and supplying more energy in the process. No wonder you feel great when you are out there jogging.

Night Time Fitness Benefits

For the evening crowd, the Danish researchers found fitness efforts later in the day lengthens the period of metabolism providing more available energy later. This may help to melt calories and ease some of the stress of the day and ensuring a better night's rest. Slimming down and sleeping better couldn't hurt.

Or maybe you can handle either fitness time zone. Sometimes I can, depending where I am, at home or out traveling. If I am at home, exercising at night works just fine. If I am traveling, getting off to an early start in the hotel gym works well too. The best advice may be to mix up the two, but not to do both in the same day.

Good Ways to Go Faster in the Morning

Here are some more ways to stay fit if you get up before everybody else. I have a friend who does a full morning workout before going into the office. She shows up smiling while the rest of us are slumped over our coffee. I really believe it's her secret for being one up on everyone and then powering through the whole day. Here are some ways to get that early morning edge.

  • Start with a wake-up stretching routine
  • Do a brisk walk around the block
  • Jog to a nearby park
  • Allow time to bike to work if you can manage it

Good Ways to Go at Sunset

I also know people who do their best fitness work in the evening. They get home, relax with their family over dinner, and then get a second wind. Instead of collapsing on the couch they keep going.

  • They may run on the treadmill in the family room
  • They may go for an evening walk with the dog
  • They often wrap up the day with stretching exercises

Whatever sounds good to you, morning or evening, may serve to keep you active every day. Good work.
