Chiropractic Quiz Do Correct Lifts Beat Back Belts?

By Sandy Schroeder

Back belts originated with weightlifters, but now we see them everywhere as workers protect their backs. Do they actually work?  That’s the question being raised by medical researchers.

According to Harvard Health, they may not reduce back injuries. A two-year study involving several thousand workers, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found back belts did not reduce back injuries. More research is sure to follow, since back problems currently cause almost 20 percent of all workplace injuries.

What We Should Know

Either way, on the job or off, whether you are lifting kids or merchandise, groceries or luggage, Harvard Health advises taking these steps:

  • Face the object and keep the item close to you as you lift
  • Never bend from the waist. Squat and bend the knees
  • Pull in your stomach, tuck in buttocks, and power the lift with your legs, not your back
  • Never raise heavy items above the waist; keep light loads below shoulders
  • Never twist while lifting. When you turn, use your whole body
  • Get help lifting or moving heavy items

When Injuries Occur

In spite of our best efforts, it’s easy to irritate the back when we work too many hours, vacuum a lot, or tote one too many toddlers. If you are feeling the effects of your efforts, your local chiropractor at The Joint Chiropractic clinic near you can help.

The Joint doctors of chiropractic help people of all ages deal with back pain and other joint injuries on a daily basis.

When you come in, your chiropractor may use a gentle, targeted spinal adjustment to achieve far-reaching pain relief, and an overall sense of well-being. Many patients say it’s like turning the page.

As your back pain improves, you may want to use weekly 15-minute adjustments to stay at your peak. At the same time, your chiropractor may suggest stress reduction tactics, a healthier diet to lose a few pounds, or a reduced work schedule. Together, you and your chiropractor can shape the best plan for you.
