Chiropractic Tips to Keep Hands and Wrists Healthy
By Sandy Schroeder
Every morning our hands pitch in to make the day happen. As we put breakfast on the table, get dressed and drive off to work, our hands never stop moving, but at the end of the day the story may be different.
We may be all too happy to take a break. Repetitive tasks at a workbench or on a keyboard may raise red flags and create lasting pain. If you, or someone in your family is struggling with hand or wrist pain, it's important to get the answers you need promptly. You may want to contact your doctor and see your chiropractor.
Seeing Your Chiropractor
The Joint Chiropractic clinic near you may be able to help. The Joint’s licensed chiropractors help everyone from teens to seniors find the best solutions for pain and wellness on a regular basis.
Your chiropractor will ask about your normal routines at home and at work, your current pain, and your health history. Together, you and your chiropractor can choose the best course of action to keep your hands and wrists healthy and pain-free.
Considering Range of Motion Exercises
According to Harvard Health, if you are suffering from swelling, pain or stiffness in your hands, mobility exercises may help keep your hands flexible and functional.
Using the normal range of motion functions of the hands, these home exercises should be done slowly and deliberately. If there is pain or numbness, stop and contact your doctor and your chiropractor. Hold each position 5 to 10 seconds, working up to 10 repetitions, three times daily.
- Thumb flexion/extension – Start with thumb pointing out. Move thumb across palm and back to starting position.
- Hand/finger tendon glide – Extend fingers straight out. Make a hook fist, returning to a straight hand. Make a fist, returning to a straight hand.
- Wrist extension/flexion – Put your forearm on a table with hand hanging over the edge, palm down. Move the hand up until you feel a gentle stretch. Return to beginning position.
