Understanding the Dangers of Backpacks

By Lana Bandoim

As kids return to school in the fall, the heavy backpacks reappear. They are filled with notebooks, folders, binders and large textbooks. Each class seems to require more materials and school supplies every year. Not only are heavy backpacks hard to carry, they are also bad for the back. Chiropractors see young patients every year who have injuries and other problems because of backpacks.

Heavy Backpacks

One of the biggest problems is that heavy backpacks can lead to injuries. They can cause spinal and joint problems for young children. They can create balance issues, posture problems and misalignments. The misalignments can lead to things such as nerve issues.

Homework and School

Unfortunately, the growth of digital devices has not eliminated heavy backpacks. Kids are still carrying large textbooks and separate binders for each class. Although they frequently use tablets and computers in school and at home, their backpacks are still heavy.

You do not want them to skip homework, and they need their textbooks at school. It is difficult to find a balance between carrying the necessary materials home and avoiding heavy backpacks. Children who are able to use digital devices for their homework sometimes have other assignments that can weigh them down.

Solutions

You can find adjustable backpacks with comfortable straps and padding. It is possible to teach kids how to pack a bag correctly to avoid making it unbalanced. It is also possible to talk to teachers and find a way to reduce the weight of the homework the kids have to carry every day. The backpack shouldn't be more than 10 percent of the child's weight. However, these solutions may not prevent all back problems and injuries.

Seeing a chiropractor on a regular basis is one of the best ways to make sure your child’s spinal and joint health is a priority. Chiropractors can reduce pain and find the root cause of many back problems. They can teach kids about posture, balance and other important aspects of spinal health.

Consider taking your children to The Joint Chiropractic if they are experiencing back problems from their bags. The doctors of chiropractic can help adults and kids feel better. They can help with a variety of spinal and joint problems. In addition, they understand that kids are often afraid of seeing a doctor, so they use a gentle approach. The Joint is open on weekends and evenings, and the flexible schedule makes it easy to see a chiropractor after school.
