Do You Care for Pears?
By Tom Herrin
Even though they may not eat an adequate amount, most people are aware that they need to include fruit as a part of their daily menu. There are lots of options. Apples are an old standard and, as the story goes, thanks to Johnny's diligent efforts to spread them across the land, they are quite popular. Many other fruits also find steady places on grocery lists. One that is often less remembered is the pear. Pears sometime seem to be a distant kin of apples but have a distinct texture and flavor. They are a fruit that bears some consideration as to their value. They have quite a bit to offer in the way of boosting health.
They May Help with Weight Loss
Pears are a really low calorie fruit with one whole pear being only around 100 calories. They are also full of fiber. These two things combined make pears ideal for those who may struggle with weight management. They are naturally sweet. They can help people to have a feeling of being full. Their water content is high as well, making another reason why they can give that full feeling.
They May Help Improve Immunity
Most people try to find ways to boost their immunity. Pears contain Vitamin C as well as other antioxidants. If there is a magic formula for fighting many common illness, this may be it. Pears are a really easy food add to the daily routine. They are pretty portable, so they do well as a snack or part of a lunch.
They Have a Unique Flavor
There is something about pears that seems to give them a really refreshing taste. As a child, I always enjoyed them with cottage cheese. They make pretty good cobblers. We still like them in various kinds of fruit salads. I like them right out a can. They are sweet but rarely too sweet. As a snack, we like to keep them around to grab and eat. They can get a little soft, so it is best to carry them in a plastic bag or wrapped in something. Either way, if you haven't had them in a while, pick up some pears and try adding it to your other foods. Pears are especially good for those of us who may have trouble biting into things that may be a little harder. Your kids will like them, and you will too.
