Vegetarianism: Pros and Cons
By Sara Butler
Vegetarianism is gaining popularity in the world for many reasons. Some of the most popular reasons include the ways in which it can have a positive impact on your health and wellness. If you're considering a vegetarian diet, then there are some important pros and cons you need to know about.
Pros of Vegetarianism
There are many pros to cutting meat out of your diet. Some of the best include:
- Reducing the risk of chronic disease - If you have a healthy diet full of fresh fruits and vegetables, plant-based protein, whole grains, seeds, and nuts, then it provides your body with an array of nutrients you may not get from diets. Studies have found that those who eat vegetarian diets have a reduced risk of certain cancers and cardiovascular disease than their meat-eating counterparts, all due to the extra punch of nutrient vegetarianism provides.
- Increasing your longevity - If you want to live longer, then a vegetarian diet may be the way to go. Certain studies have found that people who eat plant-based diets live longer than those who don't. Researchers are still unsure if the diet alone is the ticket to a longer life, but those who eat plant-based diets tend to have better habits.
- Eating a wider variety of foods - People who eat meat also tend to eat the same foods day in and day out. This results in a limited diet, something that has been found to be less of an issue to those who eat plant-based foods.
Cons of Vegetarianism
There may be many benefits to going vegetarian or vegan, but it's not all positive. There are a few drawbacks to consider as well, such as:
- Possible nutritional deficiencies - There are certain nutrients you can only get from animal products, such as Vitamin B12. That's why it's essential to eat a variety of healthy foods when you choose to cut meat or animal products out of your diet. Ensure you're getting enough Vitamin B12, zinc, Vitamin D, calcium, and omega-3 fatty acids.
- Inconvenience - It's becoming easier to find satisfying meatless meals when you're on the go, but it still offers a challenge. Always read nutritional labels for foods you buy, especially convenience foods, to help you stick to your diet and avoid ingredients that are great for you. Remember, just because a food is free from animal products doesn't make it healthy.
A vegetarian diet can be a great thing for your health but do your research to ensure you do it right.
