Signs You've Had Too Much Coffee

By Sara Butler

In moderation, coffee isn't bad for you. In fact, it can help sharpen your mind, give your energy a little kick, and even provide a few antioxidants for your health. But as with many other things, crossing the line into too much coffee can spell trouble. How do you know when you've had too much coffee? Read on to find out.

You Don't Sleep Well

If you've had too much coffee during the day, then you probably will have trouble sleeping at night. In fact, for many people, having any amount of coffee in the afternoon will keep them up when it's time to hit the hay. This reduces how much total sleep you get along with reducing your overall sleep quality. So, if you're having difficulty sleeping, then it may be because you've simply had too much coffee.

You're Anxious

Coffee can kick your body right into fight or flight mode, the reaction in your body that helped your ancestors to avoid getting eaten by a giant sloth or trampled by a woolly mammoth. The problem is, when sitting in your cubicle sipping on a cup of joe with no woolly mammoths in sight, that fight or flight response can result in anxiety. If you find yourself feeling anxious, then you may want to cut out some of the coffee you drink during the day.

You're Jittery

Right along with feeling anxious by too much coffee, you may get the coffee jitters too. This is because coffee, as a stimulant, speeds up your central nervous system. Too much coffee can leave you feeling shaky and you may even veer into nausea and a rapid heartbeat. That's a sure sign that it's time to switch to water.

You're Clothes Don't Fit

While black coffee is a low-calorie beverage, the coffee drinks people tend to consume have a lot of added fats and sugars -- which means they have a lot of calories, too. Those can really add up over the course of a day, week, and month, which can lead to excess calories that can put a healthy body weight in jeopardy. Think about cutting back on coffee for the sake of your skinny jeans if nothing else.

Coffee has its place, but it's important to know what to look for to clue you in that you may be having too much. Be careful and enjoy your coffee responsibly.
