Don't Lose Your Grip. Keep Your Hands Strong
B y Sandy Schroeder
Many of us depend on our hands to keep our world moving every day. If you have to maintain a home, work on a keyboard, or handle tools, you know how important hand dexterity and strength can be. When you start your day, your hands will be in motion all day long keeping everything going.
I spend a lot of time on my keyboard and would be totally lost if my hands did not show up to work quickly and accurately everyday. When the hours are long and details are important, hand strength and flexibility is crucial.
If you are having pain and soreness or stiffness in your hands, it could be overloading with long hours or osteoarthritis. If you are losing hand mobility in tasks at home and at work, you may also be experiencing swelling, pain and inflammation. You may have ongoing pain or sharp intermittent pain.
If your daily tasks are suffering with painful hands, see your chiropractor to diagnose the situation and find the best solutions.
When you come in, your chiropractor will want to review your daily routine and hear about the issues you are having.
Gentle targeted spinal adjustments may be the first step, followed by treatment exercises and advice on regular movement. If arthritis is involved, special equipment and tools can ease household chores.
Weekly 15-minute spinal adjustments will help your whole system and keep your hand therapy going with the help of your chiropractor.
Exercise for Mobility
As your hands loosen up, doing simple stretches to exercise the hands several times a day can ease pain and increase flexibility. Here is a sample exercise to do for 15 to 30 seconds.
Stretch the wrist - Hold hand out in front of you with elbow bent. Hold fingers with other hand and gently pull it back. Hold or 10 seconds and do 10 times. Switch hands and repeat.
Keep the Relief Coming
Warm compresses can comfort sore joints and icing can reduce swelling and inflammation.
Treat your hands carefully by using tools to open jars and bottles and set up your desk to reduce stress on your hands.
