Old-Timers' Games May Build Health Today

By Tom Herrin

Most of the time, when people think about what their grandparents or others many years older did with their time, it may seem antiquated.  In other words, people today often feel they have outgrown those older practices.  That may not be entirely true.  Many of the things people did as a pastime years ago can still have some great effects on health today.  After a hard day's work, many people once looked forward to a good dominoes game.  There may be even more reasons today than ever before to engage in this game.  It is both simple and complex and may be played by all ages.

It May Improve Math Skills

Obviously when people play a game that involves numbers, they are using math.  They will be adding, subtracting and comparing.  Developing their abilities to analyze can be a great way to develop a greater confidence in dealing with math.  Many people suffer from intimidation more than anything else when they attempt to tackle math problems.  Using practical applications for it can help.  When they play dominoes, they can have fun while using those skills.

It Can Develop the Use of Strategy

Dominoes requires players to evaluate what they see and react somewhat quickly.  Figuring a way to overcome obstacles can carry over into a lot of other things people do in their everyday lives.  Strategy is needed to be successful in school, business, dealing with others, and many other things.  When a game can help to sharpen the thinking that is necessary to do this, it can be something that makes a person experience greater success in many other things.  Developing good ways to attack a problem is something that most people can stand to improve.

It Can Improve Social Skills

Most of us can use more opportunities to interact better with others.  It can transfer to family life as well as other activities.  As we find ways to spend time together, we all gain.  Learning to play games in a manner that shows courtesy and good opportunities to socialize can lead to better social skills.  In this time when so many of us devote so much of our time -- whether at school or work -- involved with some kind of a technical device that we often become isolated, we can benefit greatly from playing a simple game.  Sitting around a game table can be quite rewarding.
