Exercise the Right Way

By Tom Herrin

There is often a right way to do something and a wrong way.  Sometimes this has to do with simply using the correct kinds of form or technique.  There are other things that are important as well.  Many times, avoiding problems when exercising may be the surest way to assure that the endeavor will be successful.  Lots of people with good intentions have suffered some fairly serious consequences after failing to follow what should have been considered good advice.  Some of that is offered here to be taken for whatever it is worth.  If they will plan well and maintain a good set of practices, they will make the kind of progress they desire.

Both Ends of a Workout Are Important

Too many times, people go through a brief warm-up before working out and another one after they have finished.  Many of them skip the cool-down completely.  It is important to remember the purpose of such activities.  All too often, they are in a hurry to get down to the business of getting what they can out of the activity.  Getting the body ready prior to it is critical.  Going through a warm-down routine can be just as important.  Both of these can bookend a good workout by helping to prevent injuries and preserve the body.

Avoid Beating Yourself up

Most people will have some kind of a feel about whether or not they are ready for a particular activity.  Many of them can wear on parts of the body by the constant repetition involved in performing the movements needed.  When people see this is the case, it will be much wiser to evaluate the effects on their body.  If they are at risk of overworking certain body parts, it will be much wiser to find some other activities to do on alternate days.  This can not only save wear, but it can also help maintain a higher level of enthusiasm.

Be Smart

It may have taken me a while to realize that I sometimes overdo it with the same activities, but I eventually learned.  I have been guilty of doing something even though it seemed to cause some pain.  It wasn't long until I found that I had strained or damaged parts that I needed.  I have now learned to use better judgment.  I am much more careful to be sure to plan for resting time for anything that gets excessive wear.  It makes all of my workouts much more productive.
