How Your Kids Can Swim Toward Better Health

By Brandi Goodman

Your kids may already spend their summers swimming and enjoying time in the water without you realizing just how beneficial it is. They're doing much more than having fun. Swimming is a great way to boost fitness and mood. Your kids can swim toward better health.

Improved Mood

A boost in mood is a great benefit in itself. Kids tend to get cranky easily and can feel stressed fast. A little time spent swimming and they're sure to experience a better mood and feel more calm afterward. The enhanced blood flow between the brain and body will help to ease tension in the mind and make kids feel relaxed and happy.

Better Sleep

Swimming feels relaxing while you're doing it, but soon after you've stepped out of the water you'll realize how hard your body has been working. Kids tend to get tired out quickly after a short swim and can expect better sleep that night. You may even find them asleep in their seats on the drive home. If your kids have trouble sleeping in the summer, take them out for a day of swimming and see how much better they sleep afterward.

Enhanced Lung Capacity

Working the heart and lungs is necessary for overall health. Children who already struggle with breathing, such as those with asthma, can benefit greatly from exercise. Swimming can enhance lung capacity and make it easier to breathe.

Stronger Bones and Muscles

Children are constantly changing and developing. Their bones and muscles need to gain strength as they get bigger and have more weight to support. Swimming is ideal for this. They'll be building stronger bones and muscles without such harsh impact that exercises done on land entails. The activity is easier on little bodies.

Developing Social Skills

Social skills are important for one's mental health. Swimming helps kids build social skills because they have to learn how to be around others in the same body of water and respect their space. Your kids may be able to make new friends by going to the pool or lake as well. This is great for boosting confidence.

Help your kids improve their health by getting them in the water more often this summer. Make sure they're kicking, splashing, and moving around as much as possible so they're boosting their fitness and health overall. It's a great activity for you to join in on as well.
