Does Apple Cider Vinegar Really Work?

By Genevieve Cunningham

Chances are good that you’ve heard of the quite infamous apple cider vinegar. This is a product that has taken the alternative health and fitness market by storm. People swear by its many abilities to keep the body well. But does it work? Is it worth it? Or is this a product that you should skip? The answer … it’s complicated. Take a look at a few answers regarding this superfood, and determine for yourself whether it’s worth the hassle.

What is Apple Cider Vinegar?

Apple cider vinegar is a vinegar made from cider or apple must. It is amber in color, and has a very strong and distinct smell and flavor. Those who are fans of the food claim that it can bring significant health benefits to the body. Can it? Research says … maybe. Besides the health benefits, apple cider vinegar can be used in cooking and cleaning, and has a place in the everyday lives of many.

What It Might Do

Some people swear by this food’s ability to help you lose weight. They take a spoonful per day (raw or mixed in water), and claim that this helps them shed a few unwanted pounds. Does it work? Many people really do lose weight, but whether this is due to the vinegar or the power of suggestion remains to be seen. Bottom line? If you can stand the taste and smell, it certainly won’t hurt you to give it a shot.

What It Will Do

Apple cider vinegar is great for alleviating a sore throat. If your throat is feeling scratchy, swallowing a teaspoon full of this vinegar or mixing it in a cup of hot water and lemon will soothe the pain and make you feel so much better. The downside is that it might burn at first. This is especially true if you swallow it raw. It burns as it goes down, but then almost immediately stops the pain. If you want to try this method, the hot water method may be better, as it won’t cause the pain but will still bring the relief.

Should you try apple cider vinegar? Maybe. You can always talk to your doctor for a little support and guidance, or you can just give it a try. So many people swear by its abilities, so maybe there’s something to it. If you decide to try it, just do a little research first so you know what to expect. Don’t expect any miracles, but as an alternative way to boost your health, it just might be worth it.
