Why It's OK to Indulge Over the Holidays

By Genevieve Cunningham

The holidays are all but right on top of us. And we all love this time of year! The friends, the family get-togethers, the laughs and fun stories. It's great! And if there's one thing that just about everyone really looks forward to at this time of year, it's the food. The delicious, traditional, flavor-packed food. For a lot of people, the food over the holidays actually causes a bit of stress. You feel as though you shouldn't eat it, but you want to so badly. So what do you do? This year, maybe you should just enjoy. If you'd like to skip the stress and love the holidays this year, take a look at these good reasons to indulge.

Indulgence Keeps Your Mind Healthy

It's not good for the mind to be too strict. It makes us feel restricted and restrained. We're adults! We shouldn't have to feel that way! Instead, allow a few indulgences here and there. This gives you more freedom and still makes you feel in control. Just plan them out. If you want the cake, allow it. Then pull back the next day to get yourself back on track. The holidays are about love and enjoyment, so love yourself and enjoy the food that's offered.

One Day Doesn't Determine Your Life

Sometimes we get too caught up on one day. It's just a day. Hopefully one day in a really long life. Don't let one day determine your entire health for the year. Just accept that it's a day for indulgence, and then go back to your diet afterward. It's OK to enjoy your day. It's OK to enjoy your food. It's OK to let it go and enjoy the holidays guilt-free.

You're Never Going to Be Perfect

It doesn't matter how hard you try, you're never going to be perfect. While this shouldn't be an excuse for going crazy and eating everything in sight, it should give you permission to enjoy. It should let you know that even the most fit people on the planet occasionally indulge and are not, in fact, perfect. If you stop striving for perfection, you may find that your body and health are actually OK just the way that you are.

It's the holidays. Enjoy yourself! Eat some goodies, drink some cocoa, and don't feel any guilty about it. Indulgences are good for the mind, body, and soul. So use the holidays as a chance to show yourself some self-love and practice your self-discipline by indulging today and getting back on track tomorrow.
