3 Ways to Improve the Cold Weather Blues

By Genevieve Cunningham

The cold weather can really put a damper on your mood. Even though there are holidays and fun activities to look forward to, there's something about the cold that just makes you feel down. Maybe it's that we can't get outside as much as we'd like. Or maybe it's the decrease in general activity. Whatever the cause, most of us would definitely like to beat those winter time blues. But is it possible? Or is the best course of action to simply wait until the warm weather comes back? Luckily, there are plenty of ways to beat the blues and boost your mood. If you're in need of a cold weather pick-me-up, take a look at these tips.

Stay Moving

One reason we tend to feel down in the cold weather is because we don't move as much. We're stuck inside where it's warm, and because of that, there's less movement happening. We're more likely to skip our exercise routine. We're more likely to choose Netflix and a warm blanket over an activity. But if you want to be mentally healthy, you really need to stay moving. Take your workout indoors, find a cold weather activity, or do something that requires body engagement. The more you move, the easier it is to fight off that seasonal depression.

Embrace the Season

A great way to feel better about the cold weather is to embrace all that comes with it. Throw yourself into the holiday fun. Get involved in a volunteer group or a local charity. Join in on some cold weather fun -- such as snowboarding or skiing or similar activities. If we just embrace our current situation instead of fighting it, it's easier to feel positive through the muck.

Get Some Sun

A lack of sun is a huge reason why moods tend to decline in the winter. But luckily, we can still get some sunshine. Just make sure that you're soaking in any warm days that are available. And even on cold days, bundle up and get outside for a few minutes. This allows you to soak in Vitamin D -- a vitamin that is crucial to your mental health. This one step may be enough to ward off the blues on days when you're riding the fence.

It can be hard to make it through the cold weather. The light becomes scarce and the cool winds are bitter. While it's definitely fun, it can also get you down. Use these tips to manage your mood and improve your overall mental and emotional well-being all winter long.
