Enjoy a Hamburger In a Healthier Way

National Hamburger Day arrives near the end of July. Now's the time to start managing your recipes and finding the best fit for the occasion. Don't just grab a cheap burger from the closest joint. You can enjoy a hamburger in a healthier way by creating your own at home.
Use a Whole Wheat Bun
White bread tends to have more calories and carbs than wheat. Choose whole wheat buns when making burgers to cut back on some of the calorie content. It's also healthier for you because of the added fiber in many instances. Take a look at the label when finding your buns so you're choosing the more nutritious option.
Skip the Bun Altogether
You really don't even need a bun at all. Get rid of the bread and just use thicker lettuce pieces to hold your sandwich together. A bunless burger cuts way back on calories and carbs. You get to taste all the flavor of the meat and veggies without having the bland bread in the way.
Cook Ground Turkey Instead of Beef
Ground beef is the main ingredient used for many burgers. Skip the beef and opt for ground turkey instead. It's a much leaner option that will help you cut down on calories and fat while still providing plenty of protein.
Don't Use Fake Sliced Cheese
It's cheap to grab a pack of American sliced cheese and throw it on your burger. This kind is fake and not good for your body in the slightest. Skip the cheese altogether or at least opt for a healthier version. A low-fat mozzarella is a better option. You can purchase blocks of cheese and slice them yourself.
Pile on the Veggies
Skip the sugar-packed condiments and pile on the veggies instead. You'll enhance the flavor with all the juices pouring out. Tomatoes, lettuce, and onion are some common options. You can give your burger some extra flair by making a unique concoction as well. Fruit, for example, can really sweeten it up without ketchup. A pineapple burger is a delicious choice.
Nutrition should always be on your mind. A hamburger isn't usually all you eat when you have this meal. Many people pair a side with it, adding in even more calories, fat, and sodium. Create a healthier hamburger at home so you can reduce the amount of all of these things and fuel your body with something better for it.
