Good Posture Makes Great Overall Health Sense

By Stephen R. Farris

Correct posture affects more parts of the body than most of us realize. It's not just to ensure we are sitting, standing, or lying down properly, but it also affects the way we twist, walk, lift, throw, and bend if our bodies are not in proper alignment from practicing good posture.

When our posture causes our bodies to be out of alignment, it can affect our muscles, joints, causing undue stress and pain, and in some cases -- if poor posture persists -- permanent injury.

Doctors and chiropractors can't stress the importance of practicing good posture enough to their patients. The health benefits of practicing good posture are:

  • Keeps our bones and joints in proper alignment so our muscles are correctly used
  • Less stress on the ligaments holding the spinal joints together, reducing risk of injury
  • Let's our muscles work more efficiently, reducing muscle fatigue and the risk of injury
  • Reduces strain on our muscles, and lessens the chance of getting back and muscle pain

Good posture can be practiced on a daily basis, whether you stand or sit at work or play, so here's a few tips to follow:

  • Keep your feet on the floor, or use a footrest if you can't touch the floor
  • Try not to cross your legs. Ankles should be in front of knees
  • Avoid sitting in the same position for long periods of time
  • When standing, keep your knees slightly bent
  • Stand up straight, stomach in, shoulders back, and head level
  • Shift your weight from toe to heel and vise-versa when standing for long periods
