Improving Neck Pain Through Chiropractic

By Brandi Swieter

The neck is often a common source of pain, especially for those who deal with daily stress. Stress tends to build up in the neck and shoulders, leaving many people with painful aches and the inability to get comfortable in any position. With regular chiropractic care, individuals suffering from pain in this area can see drastic improvement.

Trying Recommended Chiropractic Stretches

People can attempt to relieve neck pain at home by trying certain stretches recommended by a chiropractor. A flexion and extension stretch has an individual tilt their head forward, chin toward chest. They should hold this position for a few seconds before returning to the starting position. The next step has the person tilt the head backward, chin toward the ceiling. This stretch should also be held for a few seconds. The entire process should be repeated at least a few times to see results. Simply stretching the neck to either side often helps as well.

Assessing the Situation

A doctor of chiropractic will help to assess the situation if simple stretches aren’t working. He or she may ask when the pain started, what types of attempts have been made to alleviate pain, such as stretching or medications, and whether or not the pain radiates to other parts of the body. With these few questions answered, along with a physical assessment, the doctor should be able to determine how best to help.

The physical assessment could include a range of tests and checks. The doctor may feel the spine to detect the curvatures or see if there are muscle spasms present. He or she may also note posture, check the shoulder area, and test reflexes and muscle strength.

Neck Adjustment

Also known as cervical manipulation, the doctor can perform a neck adjustment by using their hand to apply pressure. It helps to increase movement of all adjoining muscles and reduce the pain and stiffness felt in the neck and shoulder region. Patients should be able to turn their head more than before and experience far less soreness when doing so.

If after trying a few exercises the neck is still aching, it may be time to visit a local chiropractor. With more than 400 locations, The Joint Chiropractic offers professional care during extended hours for your convenience. Your doctor of chiropractic can perform an assessment to see how best to help, and offer additional stretches and exercises for your particular needs.
