Shape Up For Spring!

It's easy to end the winter season a few pounds heavier and a little less fit, isn't it? We spend most of our days avoiding the cold by staying warm inside and eating all of those homemade comfort meals we love so much. We also don't hit the gym as often because it's either too "weathery" outside or the gym is packed with everyone trying to avoid that weather (and who wants to stand in line to use the machines?). Sounds like a bunch of excuses, I know, but when the elements aren't ideal, we tend to fall back on them. Which is why now is the perfect time to shape up! And the perfect way to start is to shape up your diet!

Shape-Up Your Diet First

Any good fitness routine is built around a healthy diet, so if your belly has gotten a little bigger than what you want, you need to start there. But don't worry! There is no reason to crash diet yet ... just get back to the healthy eating habits you had before. Here are a few suggestions.

  • Produce - Add more produce to your diet and then add some more! Fruits and vegetables are low in calories, rich in fiber, and packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. More than half of your plate should be filled with an assortment of produce at each meal.
  • Protein - Sunshine, warm breezes, and clear skies are the perfect combination to head outdoors and fire up the grill. It is so much easier to have a healthy meal when you are using the grill than when you are stuck inside making heavy, cream-laden casseroles. Just remember to choose lean proteins and fish, and don't forget the vegetables! Grilled zucchini, eggplant, peppers, and asparagus make excellent sides.
  • Desserts - We all understand how hard those winter desserts are to pass up, but now it's time to start choosing lighter. Thankfully, the warmer weather brings more whole fruit to our tables, so head over in that direction and steer clear of the pies, cobblers, and double-decker brownies.
  • Drink more water - You are going to be outside a lot more, so make sure you are drinking enough water! Be sure to carry a water bottle with you at all times so that you can keep track of how much you are consuming.

Shaping up for Spring

Getting back to your healthy eating habits shouldn't be too difficult. Just focus on making those small, simple changes that will help you meet your goals. It's the perfect time of year to shape up your diet and get back on track to optimal health and wellness. Happy spring!
