Old Tips for a Healthier Life

By Donna Stark

It seems there is a new health fad or diet tip making the rounds on social media every single day of the week, doesn't it? And if you do a lot of scrolling, the thought of following them all can feel pretty overwhelming! So, why don't you do yourself (and your sanity) a favor? Put your phone down and stick with what you already know. Those tried-and-true habits your mom or grandmother instilled in you really do work! Let's review a few of them below.

Walk Whenever You Can

The 10,000 steps a day challenge took off several years ago and for good reason! Walking is great for your overall health and wellness. It's easy, low-impact, and an effective way to reduce a lot of the stress in your life. Watch your steps add up by taking a walk every morning and night, during your phone calls, and while shopping in stores. You can even add some additional steps by choosing the stairs in place of elevators or escalators.

Be Proactive About Your Health

Sometimes it isn't enough to eat well and exercise daily. You can avoid a lot of serious health issues simply by staying on top of your doctor visits. Get your yearly physical, see your dentist every few months, get regular chiropractic adjustments, and don't cancel those follow-up visits!

Choose Real Food

Do you remember how amazing your grandmother's cooking was? More than likely, it was so delicious because she used real food, and not the highly processed foods we can find lining the grocery store shelves right now. Improve your health and bring back some of those incredible memories by pulling out her old recipes (or finding your own) and cooking with more fruits, vegetables, unprocessed meats, and whole grains. Get back to the way that food was meant to be cooked!

Slow Down

Life is short, so no matter what your schedule is like or how much work you need to get done, take some time to slow down and enjoy the things that matter the most to you. Play with your children, cuddle with your cat, don't rush through your meals, and find the time to travel, even if it's only to the next town over. These things are vital if you want to live a fully enriched life, so make them happen!

Doing What's Necessary

Fad diets and lifestyles may bring some benefit to your life, but are they really something you will stick with? If not, try the suggestions above. After all, they worked perfectly fine for your mom and grandmother.
