Dancing for Exercise Is Not Just for Squares

By Tom Herrin

Most people who look to find more ways to get exercise end up with the same song, second verse.  In other words, they often hit a brick wall as they have a desire to do something different but end up with another version of a common exercise program.  In order to have a little variety, it can be fun to try something different. Dancing is one activity that can provide a lot of exercise while people are having fun.  When people can keep their mind off of the exercise part of it, they can get lost in the enjoyment. Square dancing is one form of dance that can turn into a family activity that may be enjoyed successfully by all ages.

It May Work for People with Health Problems

People with issues such as heart problems often need exercise in order to improve their health.  It must be done with caution. Engaging in an activity that will not overtax the heart but still supply some needed exercise is important.  It should be done with the approval of whoever is responsible for a person’s healthcare, but square dancing is on the approved list for many who experience such problems.  For those who do not have such issues, it is a good way of working the heart as well.

It Is Good for Those Who Are Aging

As people get older, they are still in need of exercise.  Many times, they choose to ease off of those things that are highly intense.  Square dancing may be able to fill the need for such exercise. It can be a casual but steady exercise that provides work for the body.  Working the muscles and joints while socializing can be a very worthwhile activity. Many people find that they enjoy dancing several times a week in clubs or social centers.

It May Strengthen Bones

Most of us are concerned with bone density as we age.  It has become a major problem in many parts of the population.  Anytime we can participate in an activity in which we bear weight as we work our muscles, it is believed that we strengthen our bones.  If you are looking around for that unique way of getting more exercise, consider square dancing. It may bring you better health physically and emotionally.
