Compression Clothing May Be for You

By Tom Herrin

In the exercise apparel industry, there are lots of things that come and go.  New types of clothing are always out on the shelves being touted as the necessary thing for a good workout.  When people look at the ads, they are sure to see that all of the cool people wear whatever it is they are selling.  It doesn’t take much looking around to notice that compression clothing is pretty popular today. People often wear them almost everywhere, not just to exercise.  The question is do they really help or serve a useful purpose?

Stockings Help to Protect Health

Compression socks or stockings have been used for a long time.  Particularly for people who have had surgery or some other health issue, they can really protect people from serious incidents.  Anytime people are at risk of developing a dangerous blood clot, wearing compression socks can maintain pressure against the blood vessels.  This prevents blood from pooling in the extremities and helps it return to the heart. There are certain other conditions that may be helped by them as well.

Upper Body Compression Clothing

Wearing compression apparel that are shirts, vests, or some other similar thing may be a little different.  Some people wear them as they work out, while others choose to wear them after a workout. For some people, they seem to help to reduce swelling that may occur.  Others may feel that some types can offer a little support. They may also simply be comfortable, though there may not be a lot of evidence as to their ability to make a big impact.  Some of the tighter ones may help to support good circulation for some activities.

Shorts or Pants Seem to Be Multi-purpose

There appear to be many uses for compression wear for the lower part of the body.  Many people wear them for riding bicycles. They may offer support for the muscles and joints as well as allow for better airflow.  This can help to keep away perspiration problems that can cause irritation. I wear them sometimes when I have refereed soccer and found that they did a good job of providing some simple support.  They were pretty snug, but I felt much less tired once I had changed into my regular clothing. One thing to remember is that they cannot make us look like something we are not. I have seen some people wearing them who obviously didn’t get that message.
