A Physical Tune-Up Can Be Brief

By Tom Herrin

There is sometimes an art to sharpening up physical abilities.  For those who believe this, there is much to do to accomplish the goal.  Art may not be the right word, but many likely feel that, in order to reap any real benefit, they need to commit a sizable amount of time to their endeavors.  While this can often appear to be the case, some really good results may be had from minimizing their time requirements and reducing the amount of workout they do.  Despite a common notion, this may not lessen the effects felt.  A few good minutes of exercise, done correctly, can be productive.

Do a Little Running

Some people are runners and enjoy getting out and doing so for long periods of time.  There are times in which these sessions seem relaxing and help people to come away with a great feeling.  On the other hand, if they are struggling with trying to be more efficient with their time, they may be able to do much with a relatively brief session of running.  Information from the Journal of the American College of Cardiology indicated that running seven minutes per day may help to reduce the risk of death from heart disease 45 percent.

Try Riding a Bike

Some people are not cut out for running every day.  This can feel as if it can beat them up.  A Japanese study of people who rode a stationary bike for 10 minutes per day found that they were happier and better able to perform some functions that require good reaction times.  Good mental health may be a favorable part of good overall health.  In riding the stationary bike, people may be able to control their time and environment while working out.

The Whole Family May Gain

When we find ways to do activities that may be done in a shorter period of time, we may be able to involve more people.  This may include more family members.  While some may be a little turned off by the idea of spending 30 minutes or an hour doing something that may seem like work, more people may buy into the notion that five or 10 minutes can yield results while still spending some of that time together.  In the case of my family, I can get them to do almost anything for a few minutes, but the idea of spending a considerable amount of time may meet with some resistance.
