Does Working Shifts Support Good Health?

By Tom Herrin

If the question was asked if people are nocturnal by nature, there would likely be a variety of answers.  Some people are considered night owls while others are strictly early risers.  When it comes to work situations, the same may be said.  Some people prefer to work early and get off before the sun goes down, while others may enjoy the late-night hours.  On the other hand, those who work shifts may do so not because of their personal preference as much as it is a requirement of the job or it offers some kind of incentive pay.  With all of this being said, there may be some health risks for those who endure this lifestyle as a means of making a living.

Some Health Concerns May Be Valid

There may be some legitimate reasons as to why people who work shifts should be guarded about their health.  Some studies have shown that those workers have an increased risk of developing diabetes.  They may also be more prone to issues such as high blood pressure.  While it is believed that some of these risks may lessen as people become accustomed to the shift, it is still a valid concern for many.

A Few Things to Help Protect

People should not be too discouraged if they have the necessity of working shifts.  There are some things that may be done to offer a better barrier against some of these potential problems.  Eating on a regular schedule is generally good for anyone.  This may be even more critical for those who work shifts.  Particular attention should be paid to the nutritional value of those meals.  Too many times, those who work shifts rely on vending machines or other ready-to-eat food since they are not able to eat with the family.  Developing a consistent routine of exercise is essential as well.

Prioritize Your Well-Being

A lot of times, we are so busy trying to make a living and do our part in family finances that we fail to make a good commitment to taking care of ourselves.  If we work shifts, we need to do everything possible to create the healthiest and safest environment possible.  It will be a worthwhile investment of our time and efforts.  It may also be a great way to strengthen connections within our families, and most of us can appreciate that.
