Somewhat Desperate Times May Mean New Perspectives

By Tom Herrin

It is amazing what people may learn by being in difficult circumstances.  There are times in which things they never dreamed of may suddenly become part of life.  During the Civil War, in the siege of Vicksburg, many of the local citizens were forced to live in isolation.  As food supplies began to run low, some people began to eat food they had previously thought was only fit for feeding animals.  As a result, they tried black-eyed peas.  Many now eat them as part of regular meals.  The same can happen today as many people look for different things to do for survival.  For many, it may be new foods while others may look for other ways to have activity.

Talk and Play

There is nothing wrong with spending time with family members.  Too many times, people feel they are too busy to do something as a family.  Games are not just for kids.  Even those who are older can enjoy participating in them.  And these games may be something other than just board games.  There are plenty of other things such as making craft items, organizing scavenger hunts, and lots more.  Allowing the kids to come up with ideas may be helpful.

Have a Little Group Exercise

Many people don't get enough physical activity.  When they are in a situation in which they are somewhat restricted as to where they can go and when, it may take a little more effort.  Organizing some group exercise may not only be good for health, but it may also be good for morale.  Exercise can be fun, and it may be in the form of some games.  There are plenty of things that can be played.  Whether or not it is a highly developed game or something that is simply created by some family member.  It may do wonders to get more people to buy into the plan.

Whatever You Do, Build on Opportunities

We may never again have a time in which we spend so much time together.  As we do, we may as well make the most of it.  Our family particularly enjoys eating meals together.  It provides us a great chance to have quality interaction.  I have found that as I practice being a better listener, we all gain greater insight and respect for one another.  There is no time like now to take advantage of all of this.
