Dress Well for the Best Exercise the Cold
By Tom Herrin
For the most part, we should dress right for any occasion. This always includes some of those times in which we need to look our best for a job or situation. In the case of exercise, it means that we need to dress in a way that enables us to move as freely as possible. At the same time, we need to be able to stay comfortable, that is, not too cold and not too hot. It can be pretty miserable to go outdoors to be active and end up either burning up or freezing. I have done both.
There was a time in which I would ride my bicycle as long as it was not below 30 degrees. I usually did this later at night. It was sometimes a problem as I might not be able to warm enough or got too warm. It is generally suggested that layers is the best answer to this problem.
The Innermost Layer Is Tricky
At one time, a lot of us would wear some kind of thermal underclothes when it was cold. It was okay for working, but there are plenty of better fabrics in use today. It is recommended that we wear a base layer that is tight-fitting. It is best if it can wick away moisture as well as allow some air flow to occur. This can keep us dry and have air to cool us when we need it.
The Middle Layer Counts
We may spend time on the inner and outer layers and forget the importance of the middle layer. It really has to supply some insulation to help in keeping the temperature regulated. Many times, a thick but lightweight material works best. This can work just like the insulation in a house as it traps air in the middle. This prevents sudden heating up or cooling down. Of course, moisture will need to pass through this layer as well.
The Outer Layer Should Provide Some Protection
What we wear on the outside has to protect us from wind, rain, and other things such as scrapes. It must be durable. As it does these things, it must also allow air and moisture to move in and out. If we get too warm, we may want this layer to be one that is easily removed. It is pretty important to take good care of this layer as it will be taking care of us. With some good planning, your winter outdoor exercise can be as successful as you would like.
