Dr. Durham Maples became part of The Joint Chiropractic team in 2017 as an associate in the Lexington SC clinic location and recently was named Clinic Director at Harbison. He received his doctorate from Sherman College of Chiropractic in 1987.

“I love to work with the best doctor in the universe, the human body,” Dr. Maples says. “Watching the human body heal itself when the nervous system is freed to function properly is what excites me about this profession on a daily basis.”

Raised in Ocala FL, Dr. Maples practiced in Lugoff SC before moving to practice chiropractic with The Joint in Columbia.

When he’s not working, you’ll find Dr. Maples playing chess and reading detective novels (especially Nero Wolf), since he enjoys solving mysteries, and the Bible for the good values to live by.

Dr. Maples became a believer in chiropractic when he saw how chiropractic helped his father, and he gets fulfillment out of his patient stories, “I adjusted a man that was only able to sleep upright in a chair. He had not been able to sleep in his bed for 7 years. When he traveled to hotels, he would bring his chair with him! After receiving continuous adjustments, he was finally able to sleep comfortably in his bed.”

Dr. Maples obviously has a great sense of humor and states that the one thing he always keeps stocked in his refrigerator is “cold air; because without it you only have an expensive box filled with rotten food!”

If he was to share a meal with any famous foursome in history, he would choose Ronald Reagan and his mother, and John Wayne and his mother. “There would have to be a lot of great stories among these people, because your mother always tells your business about when you were a little boy.”

Dr. Maples says the coolest thing he has ever done is visit Walt Disney World on the second day it opened. “It encompassed making memories with the people that I love,” he says, “and that lasted for a lifetime. It taught me that even though those memories are nostalgic, Disney was about always looking forward because that is where the entertainment in life comes from”

If he were to provide a bit of advice, it would be to “remove your emotions from all decision making. Decisions that you make in your life out of anger, fear or any other emotion usually end up being bad decisions.”

Dr. Kayla Cooper has had a wide reach as a member of The Joint Chiropractic team since joining the staff in March 2019; she works out of several different locations, including Forest Acres, Killian Crossing, Harbison and Lexington.

She majored in biology and earned a minor in chemistry at Presbyterian College in Clinton before getting her doctorate of chiropractic from Palmer College of Chiropractic Florida.

“The thing I love about being in the chiropractic field is being able to offer all people help regardless of anything else; everyone with a spine living in earth’s gravity is a great candidate for an excellent chiropractic patient,” she says. “It’s also gratifying to help with major current crisis, specifically the care of our military members and veterans and those who seek musculoskeletal pain relief through opioids. These populations of people are primed to be taken care of by excellent chiropractors. In doing so, our country will be healthier and have better posture.”

A product of Lexington, Dr. Cooper worked previously in Irmo and Orangeburg. In her spare time she loves traveling, fishing, going to the beach, and relaxing with friends and family, including husband Tyler, their two sons, and a German short-haired pointer named Rambo.

She had chiropractic ingrained in her at an early age.

“I was born in Iowa, less than an hour away from the oldest and first chiropractic college, Palmer,” Dr. Cooper says. “As my sister and I moved around with our family, our mother would always take us to see the chiropractor no matter where we lived, and she would call around looking for a ‘Palmer doc.’ So I knew that if I was going to become the ‘family chiropractor’ that my family always envisioned, I would go to Palmer.

“After college, I was unsure what to do, and was enrolled into the RN program at Midlands Tech. I realized one day that I wouldn’t be an awesome nurse or MD because I am very emotional and not good at bad news -- or bodily fluids. It was the second summer after I graduated from Presbyterian College that I started chiropractic school at Palmer in Florida. ... It was a perfect fit for me and I loved it.”

In her current role, she is able to practice where she grew up.

“I thoroughly enjoy being able to treat people from all sides of Columbia and enjoy being able to explore different sides of town as well,” she says.

Dr. Cooper says the one thing she always keeps in her refrigerator is filtered water “because water is the most important thing you can have.”

If she could have any four people from history at a fantasy dinner party, Dr. Cooper says she would include chiropractic pioneer BJ Palmer, Hippocrates, media mogul Oprah Winfrey, and baseball player Jim Abbott.

“Palmer developed this fine profession we call chiropractic, and Hippocrates was the father of modern medicine, so I would love to have a scholarly discussion with them about the current state of health and healthcare in the world,” she says. “Oprah is one of the most influential figures of my lifetime. I have watched her since I knew how to watch a television, and her journey as a woman in a man’s world is one that profoundly inspires me.

“As for Jim Abbott, I had his baseball care when I was a young girl, and the idea that he can become a major league pitcher with only one hand is very inspirational; what an example to the world that you can reach your dreams no matter your physical limitations.”

The coolest thing she has ever done, she says, “was creating two brand new humans.”

“Outside of that, participating in a 10-day clinic abroad in the West Indies was the coolest thing I’ve done. I had the privilege of being selected to go to an island called Bequia -- the second island in St. Vincent and the Grenadines -- to treat the population with chiropractic care,” Dr. Cooper says. “The whole island is 7 square miles and economically categorized as third world. The people were so excited that we were there, and we went to all corners of the island and every school on the island.

“Treating so many kids was the highlight for me. Watching them and their teachers and parents enjoy the benefits of chiropractic, which they do not typically have access to, was a real life-changing experience. The pure joy and happiness that exuded from the population on Bequia is something I try to carry with me all the time.

“And one of the bars had whale vertebra as bar stools. Coolest thing I have ever seen.”

Every chiropractor here could be considered phenomenal at what they do, and it’s not an understatement to say that they are. In the past year that I have been visiting the office, I have seen a major improvement in my mobility and pain. While I was happy with my treatment there for lower back pain, I was very unhappy with the fact that they started charging me monthly for something that I didn’t sign up for. When I went back to ask them about it, they produced a paper with a digital signature on it so of course they’re going to say that I signed off on monthly payments. I did not knowingly do that. They did not seem to care about my concerns and offered no refunds. Be very careful what you’re signing there. I believe there were some shady things going on there and I definitely will not be going back.

Hello Dr. Maples, I received your message, and to be completely honest, my experience at your clinic was unacceptable. I have been treated by multiple chiropractors over the years, and this was by far the worst experience I’ve ever had. I came in with severe lower back pain due to sciatica and had already taken pain medication. I was specifically seeking relief—not to leave in worse condition. I clearly told the provider that I was in pain and asked for careful treatment of my lower back. Despite that, she proceeded to perform drops directly on the area I said was hurting. This showed a complete lack of attention and care. I had to stop the session immediately because the pain became unbearable. As a result of that visit, my condition worsened, and it took me nearly two weeks to recover. That is completely unacceptable for a healthcare setting. Because of this experience, I will not be returning under any circumstances. I will also be sharing my experience with others, as people should be aware of the level of care I received. You may want to seriously review your staff’s approach to patient care, communication, and basic attentiveness to avoid this happening to someone else.

Dr. Boyd at the columbia, SC loactions is an amazing magician. She gave me an adjustment last week and was without pain nearly all week and I started being able to sleep 8 to 12 hours a night to catch up on years of not sleeping more than 3 or 4 hours at a shot for a max of 6 hrs a night. I would give it zero stars, but it wouldn't allow me to so so. I've never been to this place, but I had booked an appointment for me and my children. Morning of, Faith calls me and states that the doctor wanted details of my symptoms. I felt uncomfortable sharing my and my children's medical conditions over the phone and expressed that to her. I told her that I would rather wait to see the doctor to do that. Her attitude changed and she then, in a passive aggressive way, stated to me that "in all of my 8 years of working here, no one had refused to give me details of their symptoms" and that I was on a recorded line so the doctor will be able to hear my symptoms before going in. First of all, I didn't refuse. Second, I started to tell her what was going on, but felt very uncomfortable and didn't want my and my daughter's medical history to be recorded on a phone conversation. I repeatedly expressed that to her, but she kept forcefully insisting. At that point, I already had felt she was being invasive and intrusive. I replied back to her that in all my 55 years, I've never had to go over my symptoms in detail over the phone. I've always talked with the doctor directly and that 55 years trumps 8 years. Finally, after going back and forth, I told her to cancel all of our appointments because I can go to another establishment. There are plenty of chiropractors in Columbia. I felt that she and this office were very unproffessional. I felt like she didn't care that I was not comfortable with this procedure. I just wanted to get an adjustment and have my children get one too. I'm a retired holistic practitioner and have never experienced this where I did not get to talk with the doctor directly. It felt very cookie cutter and like I was just another body going through an assembly line; like a cow going out to slaughter. My first and only experience with this office was belittling, cold and uncaring. Faith was the first contact. She represented herself and the doctor. I felt she was demeaning and did not listen to me. She can take her 8 years and throw it in the closet! I will not be going to this office.

I’ve been a patient for 4 years. They’ve helped me enjoy a better life by reducing my spinal pain that I’ve had over the years due to stenosis. With the exception of one chiropractor who I won’t mention, because his technique is absolutely atrocious, the other chiropractors are GREAT! Highly recommend and enjoy the convenience of going to other practices whenever I’m out of town! Best deal in town! $59/month for 4 visits a month and only $10 a visit if it’s with in that 30 day time frame…

No compassion I am a member on a plan that was visiting Columbia. I had to drive in traffic for 1 hour from East to West Columbia. The trip should have taken 34 mins, but because of the heavy traffic it took me driving in traffic for over an hour an half to get to the door 2 mins after closing. I do realize it was 2 mins after closing time, but they were sitting there talking. I explained that I had drove for over a hour and half to get to them and my neck was locked up. I explained that I was in pain and my neck was hurting, but that did not matter. Now I will have to wait until Monday morning to be seen or go to the emergency room for pain meds.

My daughter had initially recommended this place just for keeping her back loose and mobile. It's helped her with her pain. I signed up out of curiosity and have enjoyed my first month of weekly care. The rate is affordable and they let you cancel at any time. I was surprised how little wait there was (yay) and how quickly and efficiently care takes place. I kinda wish they'd add some simple stretches, other bodywork options or even more patient education to the experience. Overall, I'm pretty happy with this joint and also the northeast location near Killian rd. ?

Receptionist was unbelievably rude. I Came in in a downpour of a rainstorm. She made a snotty sarcastic statement about me needing my mask on. Sent me back out in the rain to get one... came back in and she was griping and the next guy about a mask. She refused me services because she claimed I had a "refusal to pay".at my home location. Likely a change in credit card on file but rather than call to straighten it out she just sent me away. I have been a member with the joint for many years, but this visit, was a horrible experience.

Please be advised that the staff at the Harbinson location will not inform you of all the so called"contract details" when they are selling you what they presume to be a sweet deal. I only planned to attend for 4 visits and was so called given 3 for free. I paid $98 my first visit which was fine. I ended up having to work weekends and closing due to coverage at my job so I missed my next few sessions. No big deal. I also ended up being quarantined so that also impacted me not making my sessions but hey, I paid my money and I was fine with that. All of a sudden billed $69 outside of the $98. I called and the lady says yeah you signed a contract. I said no I didn't, I agreed to the 7 sessions I already paid for and didn't even use because life happened. Basically the lady's proceeds to tell me I'm sol. I'm mortified and definitely plan to spread the word on the horrible customer service and sales scheme going on over there. A total waste of time and money. Horrible sales tactics bad business all around.

Very unpleasant experience. Dr. Maple was a nice guy but my pain got worse and never subsided five visits in. I ended up having to get other therapy from another practice because my concerns weren’t being addressed. I called to discuss my problem and never received a return phone call. At that point I was frustrated and their only concern was that I was under contract and needed to come in to fill out a cancellation form otherwise they would continue to charge me. Update: Two visits into new therapy and my back is much better. My legs aren’t uneven, my backs not crooked. Just needed a care plan that listened and works. Double the money… But so happy I made the move.

Originally I was skeptical of having a chiropractor adjust my body, until December 2019 when my neck locked up on me from constant strain caused by looking at dual monitors at work. The pain was unbearable until I went to The Joint, and the doctors there helped alleviate the pain I felt being locked in one position. After that I continued going due to them saving me from that bad experience with my neck.

He is easy to talk to and has a sense of humor but more importantly he truly takes the time to determine problem areas, to use different methods to correct the problem and to give advice for helping and/or avoiding issues as needed. Although I may be young, I walk around and lift and pull heavy materials for 8 hours, 5 days a week and workout everyday. So that really put stress on my body, importantly my back and knees.My second visit was way better than my first. My first official visit she really didn't do anything I was in and out no less than 10 minutes. However, in my second visited, he relief the pain in my back, knees and my neck. I basically got the experience I wanted in the second visit.

Completely unsatisfied. My boyfriend who was in unbearable pain needed to see a chiropractor. We just so happened to see an advertisement on television for this place. We went there and he sat in the lobby for nearly two hours. He filled out several pages of paperwork. He finally gets called back and the doctor asked him if he’s ever seen a chiropractor before, which he answers yes. He hadn’t gone to a chiropractor in almost a year, but this doctor did not care. He turned him away after waiting for TWO HOURS, just because he has seen a different chiropractor in the past. So, my boyfriend leaves with unbearable pain because he has seen someone different in the past. It’s like shopping at target and you go to Walmart and they turn you away because you’ve shopped at target before! Do not recommend what’s so ever.

Also refused to give me my paper work back so I can now be spammed with emails by a place who refuses patients. Do not believe their advertisements on specials, waste of time, energy, money. I am extremely dissatisfied with the lack of communication and customer service I have received. My last appointment with you all was back in June I checked in with the lady at the front desk she told me that I had no more appointments left. I have not been back to any joint since then it was my understanding when signing up that I was paying for 4 appointments. It was not made clear to me that I would be charged monthly for 69$ nor was I made aware that I even had appointments left. I did attempt to go in the office and speak with another front office lady she was rude and very sarcastic towards me when I was just trying to gain clarification. She also refused to cancel my membership under any circumstance. This is the worst service I have ever received from anywhere. I will be leaving a review and letting everyone know of the treatment I received today.

If you are a woman who plays a contact sport, avoid this place. They will not take you seriously. I have played roller derby for almost three years now, and I've taken a good number of hard falls and hits that will really mess with your alignment. I've had neck pain off and on that has primarily been caused by these hits and falls, I know this because it started after a particularly bad fall and was recently aggravated by a hit to the jaw. The chiropractor I saw told me that it was, in fact, poor computer posture and not the fact that I play a contact sport that caused my neck pain. My neck actually hurts more now than it did before the adjustment (I've seen other chiropractors before, and this is absolutely not normal). I'm only giving two stars because the chiropractor adjusted my hips and that actually did help. I've had issues with my hips getting out of whack for years and this was actually really beneficial because now I know how it's supposed to feel. Update as of February 11, 2020: Not long after I posted this, my hip started acting up far worse that it was. Prior to the adjustment here, when my hip was acting up, I could just pop it back into place and it would be better. Now, I can’t even do that. It’s just constantly out of whack. I didn’t update sooner because I had hoped it would improve on its own. It hasn’t.

Went in with lower back pain bad enough that it was painful to walk. I own two tens units to loosen the muscles in my back when they get tight. Long story short after my first visit let’s just say I haven’t had a need for the tens unit since.

I’ve always wanted to see a chiropractor but thought it’d be too expensive. I had seen information about The Joint for a while. I finally decided to bite the bullet when my neck and shoulder tension became unbearable. I figured I’d try it out for $29 for an initial visit. I didn’t come in with the intention of signing up for any sort of membership, but after my first session I 100% wanted to come back. I’ve only been going less than a month but I’m really impressed by what they’ve been able to accomplish. I used to feel my neck cracking every time I moved my head and now I barely feel that. I’m always surprised how much relief I can get out of my brief visits. I’ve mostly have seen Dr. Bell but I have liked all the chiropractors I’ve seen at this location. If you have been on the fence about a chiropractor I suggest you start here with the $29 initial visit.

Dr. Maples does great for my back neck and hip adjustments. Also Courtney is the best front desk coordinator. All I know is I've been going through chiropractic care for years. I am a dental hygienist and my back shoulders and neck become very tight. I also have been in accidents and a horse went wild and I fell off. Just want others to know they aren't there to rip you off. They dont take xrays or deal with insurance. They are a wellness facility with a way better rate than the others that I've been too!!!!!

Dr. Maples was GREAT! After seeing him, for the 1st time, I reconsidered cancelling my membership. Over all, I think the services I have received at the other locations were good too, but I wasn't seeing results. Called ahead at 1:30p. Asked if I could be seen for my neck pain. Said as long as I get there before 3pm. I arrived at 2:45 (35 minute drive) and the girl at the front desk said I can't be seen because otherwise they won't get out on time. I told her she just told me as long as i get there before 3p, it wouldn't be a problem, to which she replied "sorry"... Completely rediculous. If you are going to close at 2:45, then change your hours. Where I work, we see our patients up to the last second before we close, even if that means I have to see patients 3 hours after closing time. It's called "caring for your patients". Never will I return nor refer patients to this company.

Dr. Rick is amazing! Harbison just got a new Doc. Dan is the guy & a top notch Doc. I've been to Chiro's regular for 40 years now & they don't come any better than Dan. Dan has the gift very similar to dowsing where he can identify where your problem is by touch & the old school moves to get it fixed effectively. My back hasn't felt this good in ages. DO NOT GO TO THIS CHIROPRACTOR'S OFFICE!!! My husband went in for a hip/sciatic issue and left with a broke rib. We have been calling for almost 2 weeks and no one will return our call. All we want is the $118 he paid for 2 months advance service refunded, the $50 copay we paid when we went and had it x-rayed and reimbursement for his medication. He is in worse pain now than he was when he went there AND he is looking at 6-8 weeks for his rib to heal!!! We called corporate to said we would have to sue the doctor for malpractice. Every person we have spoken to at The Joint has taken a message because the owner is the only person who can issue a refund?!?!?! Do you seriously want to be sued rather than just paid us back what we are due??? We are asking for less than $200 back......You attorney is going to charge you more than that just to read the summons and reply.

DO NOT GO!!! Christy the "wellness coordinator" aka front desk greeter does not explain the process of their so called membership accurately. My daughter was sold a wellness plan that was explained to us as consisting of a weekly visit for 1 month for $59 however, we were NOT told that after the month was over you had to cancel or The Joint (Harbison) would draft your bank acct then refuse to give you a refund. Very dishonest and misleading! Would not recommend The Joint (Harbison) to anyone unless you like having your money taken.

POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE! GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!! I went to the Joint Columbia in early 2016 and cancelled my account in May of 2016 because I no longer need there service. I was emailed a cancellation form and because it needs a hand signature I promptly returned it back to the physical location. I stopped receiving emails of monthly receipts for their services. I thought everything was fine and dandy...WRONG. Here we are in 2018 and I get a notification from my insurance company and what do I see but a charge from The Joint. I'm really confused because I haven't been there in two years. I call them up and not only have they charged my health care card in 2018 but they charged it though out 2017 as well. They then say it's my problem that my account wasn't properly cancelled I quickly remind them 1. I clearly haven't been in two years because they would have seen me on the scheduled 2. I have not been sent any emailed receipts for their services like I did when I was actually going there. This business pretends to be hip and cool with paperless receipts but won't say "hey we see you have this subscription we're charging you for and you haven't been here in TWO whole years". I ended up reporting the charge as fraud to my insurance company. Don't go here. They don't know how to treat people.

If you have not gone to The Join on Harbison, I would strongly advise that you do so. Not just for the adjustment, but for the exceptional service and the genuine care that the members of this organization display. On a recent visit, I was going to reestablish myself as a patient since I had not been in a long while. I found out that there was an issue with my balance and my wellness plan had not been cancelled. I had an outstanding balance that I was not able to pay at that point in time. But the owner himself came out front, spoke to me, understood my situation, and forgave the debt that I owed. Not many establishments have their owner in office on most days, and to see that the owner was willing to speak to me personally, hear my situation, and forgive the misunderstanding in the way that he did, just goes to show how much the leadership and staff at The Joint Harbison truly cares for taking care of its clientele. Everyone, from the front desk staff, to the doctors, to the owner, are all genuinely amazing people, who truly care for the well-being of their patients/clientele. Once again, if you have not gone, I would highly recommend that you do so. The service is amazing, the leadership is outstanding, and the doctors there really know how to get you right and offer thought-out wellness and treatment plans for your continued wellness.

I just had my first visit today with Dr. Bell and it was fantastic!! David at the front desk was super helpful, he explained everything and was so personable. Dr. Bell was very kind and knowledgeable, and was very understanding of my issues. What a fantastic experience!! I threw out my back the night before, couldn’t sleep all night from the pain, and was so stiff I couldn’t bend. The staff was excellent and friendly. Dr Johnson, & Dr Bell always do an amazing job. They are very thorough, & listen to my problems & needs. They make sure to take the time to fix your issues, & make sure that you are the focus of the session. I also appreciate the time they take to talk with my son, who has Autsim, & make him feel special & welcomed. Dr Johnson makes sure to ask him about him school, & interest everytime she sees him even if she is not the one working on him. I have enjoyed the majority of the doctors that I have seen at different times, & locations. Dr Touchett, Dr D, & Dr Singleton have been some of the others that have made a difference, & helped with my pain relief.

Dr. Bell is by far the best chiropractor I've ever had. After many spinal injuries and a couple of surgeries, nothing about me is text book. Dr. Bell listens to me carefully and devises a treatment plan with me. I am grateful for the attentiveness to my needs.

These Drs are good at what they do! They listen to each patient and customize adjustment to fit the needs. Friendly staff that know you by name and take the time to get to understand what each patient needs. Each Dr. has their personality and once you find one that matches yours and treatments work for you, that is the one that you find the schedule for and schedule your weekly visits around them. We have even passed if they’re not working or driven across town to where they are to ensure OUR best results! Dr Darrien and the “Teddy Bear” are our choices at Forest location.

This is a wonderful practice and you can’t beat the maintenance plan price. The staff is always so friendly and nice. I had really hurt my back and they helped me to be able to stand up straight again. I love that I can go to a location close to my office during the week or a location close to home on the weekend. This makes it very convenient to accommodate my ever changing schedule. I can’t say enough good things about my experience at The Joint.

Dr. Bell at the Joint Harbison is great! After trying 2 other chiropractor chains with no success, he finally got my stubborn spine adjusted the way it needed to be. 4 visits per month for $59.oo is a great deal. Check around and see. David up front is always friendly and the facility is very nice and always clean. Usually in and out in 15 minutes or less. Don’t listen to the 2 negative reviews below. They are just from people who evidently can’t read, listen, or understand the concept of contracts and recurring billing.

I just have to say that after 5 years of daily headaches and being sent to specialist after specialist with no answers, a simple shoulder knot became the answer to my prayers. I tried The Joint when I had a shoulder knot causing me extreme pain, but as soon as I went for that issue, I left without my daily headache. I have been going once a week for 2 months and all the Doctors that Dr. Bell has, including Dr. Bell himself are seriously my lifesavers. My headaches aren't daily anymore and when I get a bad one, only 5 minutes at The Joint and it disappears. I would seriously recommend this place for anyone who needs not just joint care but headache relief as well. It is so affordable also, which makes it that much better. I would rather pay the small price they charge to relieve my pains, than spend thousands of dollars on doctor visits and have to take daily pain meds.

I just started going and signed up for the wellness plan, a great price and with this last adjustment yesterday the doctor noticed a stubborn area and used a technique termed “the hanger” by a fellow doctor to adjust the spot. I can not remember the last time I didn’t have pain in that area behind my shoulder blade/neck and shoulders! I am so incredibly impressed and feeling fantastic today! They have a great friendly and knowledgeable staff!
