5 Tips for Setting Better Fitness Goals

Many people want to work out and obtain better fitness results, but not everyone knows how to set the appropriate fitness goals to make that happen. It takes a lot more dedication and planning to be fit than simply hitting the gym once in a while. With some tips for setting better goals, more people can see the results they desire.
Make the Goal Measurable
Simply saying, “I want to lose weight" or “I want to get fit,” is not a realistic goal. This is far too broad, and makes it very difficult to achieve success. The point is to make goals that are measurable. There has to be a way to track progress. In terms of losing weight, this could mean saying, “I want to lose five pounds in a month.” For fitness, this could mean, “I want to work out four times a week.”
Set an End Goal
While there should be measurable goals set for a shorter duration, such as daily or weekly, there should also be an ultimate end goal as well. This is the true goal that people want to meet in their lives. This may be something like being able to bench press 200 pounds, or losing 20 pounds within the next four months.
Don’t Make the Goal Too Hard or Too Easy
A goal that is far too easy to reach may have people getting bored with their plans quickly. Losing a half a pound in two weeks can be done by anyone, and won’t show much difference on the scale. On the other hand, a goal that is far too difficult to reach will put people off of what they’re doing when they don’t make their goal in time. Losing five pounds in a week is not healthy, nor is it easy to accomplish for most people. Setting a goal of losing just two pounds per week could be the middle ground.
Keep a Fitness Journal
Writing down the end goal and all other smaller goals will help keep people on track. Keeping a fitness journal is a great way to help people jot down their thoughts, get motivated, and stick with their goals in the long run. Foods eaten, days incorporating fitness, and even simple fitness quotes and inspirational messages can be a huge help in this process.
Revise Goals as Needed
Perhaps a person doesn’t quite reach their goal on time. Maybe they realized their objective to run five days a week is taking a toll on their body or interfering with work. Goals can and should be revised as needed. People can reevaluate every few weeks and see how they want to change their plans to make their end goal work for them.
Setting better fitness goals allows people to experience better results. Rather than attempting to hit the gym on occasion, a more productive plan is to set specific daily or weekly goals that help people achieve their desired outcome.
