Singing for Oatmeal
By Donna Stark
There's a song from Sesame Street that I used to sing with my daughter when she was a toddler. It was called, "I Like an Oatmeal Box," and every time I made her oatmeal, she would bang on the box like a drum and we would sing it as best as two non-singers could sing. She loved those times, and there were moments that I think she asked for oatmeal simply because she wanted to perform. But now, she is in her 20s, and although we still bring up that song every now and then, she doesn't ask for oatmeal simply for the chance to perform. No, now she asks for it because she knows it's good for her health. And it's good for your health too.
Health Benefits of Oats
It's been known for ages that oats are good for your heart, but that's not the only reason to enjoy that warm bowl of oatmeal in the morning. Here are some more reasons for you to get that box of oats out of the pantry.
- Fiber - Oats contain both soluble and insoluble fiber which are great with lowering and maintaining healthy cholesterol and blood sugar levels.
- Protein - Having oats for breakfast is an easy way to get some of your recommended daily amount of protein in. And to boost your protein intake even more, top it off with some peanut or almond butter.
- Nutrients - Oats are a great way to kick-start your daily intake of all the vitamins and minerals your body needs, such as magnesium, iron, zinc, folate, and Vitamin B.
- Improved health - Studies suggest that oats can help reduce the risk of heart disease and the amount of insulin a diabetic patient may need. Adding oats to your diet is also a great way to maintain a healthy weight as it provides an increased feeling of fullness.
