Avoid a Tanning Bed at All Cost: Here's Why

By Virginia Laird

If you are one who enjoys the leisurely time and warmth a tanning bed has to offer, you may be putting your health at risk. Although there are millions who will begin racing to the tanning bed this spring, there are many researched hazards to relying on this type of tan. Health and wellness experts suggest a few reasons you should avoid the tanning bed at all costs, including:

  • Tanning can cause premature aging
  • Tanning is linked to cancer
  • Tanning is expensive

Tanning Can Cause Premature Aging

No matter if you are a tanner using a bed or one who prefers to lay outside catching the natural rays, exposure to sun can cause premature aging. This includes wrinkles, aging spots, and much more. Experts admit that tanning in a tanning bed can expedite these effects more quickly than the natural rays. This has much to do with the fact that these rays are more concentrated. There are very few who prefer a lovely wrinkle above beautiful, radiant, and youthful looking skin. Do yourself a favor and drop the tanning bed habit today.

Tanning is Linked to Cancer

For years, unprotected exposure to the sun has been linked to skin cancer. However, the number of those who experience cancer and have been frequent visitors to the tanning salon is astronomical. Research suggests that routine tanning doubles the odds of developing cancer, including melanoma. Dermatologists preach that the best way to prevent skin cancer is to limit exposure to sunlight and avoid tanning beds.

Tanning is Expensive

Tanning is expensive in a variety of ways. For starters, most who enjoy tanning join with a monthly fee. While using these facilities, there are rules about what types of lotions can be used in the salon. Many of the tanning lotions that are suggested to be used are upward of $50. These bottles do not last a long time, therefore it is likely you will be purchasing one each month. Still, there is plenty of expense that you will encounter. As you enjoy tanning, you will (at some point) find the need to visit with a dermatologist concerning new freckles and moles which seem to take over your body. These visits are costly. If you are one of the unlucky ones who is diagnosed with cancer, you will be billed with a great deal of medical expense, making tanning one of the most expensive habits you have ever enjoyed.

Do yourself a favor: if you are a lover of tanned skin tones, opt for a spray tan and chase it with sunscreen. You will be glad you did as you are able to avoid wrinkles and cancer.
