Falling for the Flu: 3 Tips to Help Avoid It

By Virginia Laird

Winter and spring are the seasons of much happiness, many adventures, and the flu. The flu has long been recognized in the healthcare world as one of the most devastating viruses a person may deal with. It can cause high fevers, body aches, nausea, and many other symptoms. Although there is a vaccine, the debate of that topic is endless. Even doctors admit there is nothing that can truly prevent, in totality, a person’s chances of getting the flu. Physicians do offer tips that cover basic healthy hygiene, which can help decrease the chances of coming down with the virus, including:

  • Shower before bed
  • Always carry sanitizer
  • Eat a balanced diet

Shower Before Bed

While there are many who prefer to shower in the morning as part of the routine to get them going, it is important to shower in the evening. Showering before bed allows you to wash away any and all germs which may be lingering in unwanted locations. Going to bed while harboring germs can actually increase your risk of illness, including getting the flu. You can keep your morning routine intact, simply add a light shower to rinse away germs before bed.

Always Carry Sanitizer

Just as important as washing your hands is carrying sanitizer with you. There are times when getting to a sink to wash with soap and water may not be convenient. These are the times when sanitizer can take care of ridding the hands of germs. Washing and sanitizing the hands often can help prevent the spread of germs, including the flu.

Eat a Balanced Diet

The food you choose to eat plays a huge role in your health as well as preventing illness. Making sure to eat the proper nutrients needed can help prevent illness. During flu season it is vital to eat a well balanced diet. Although veggies may not be a family favorite, they are important. Consider trying various recipes to spice up your veggies if you have a difficult time getting the family to eat them. If your home is anything like mine, it is not the children who refuse: It is the spouse.

As long as you are doing everything you can to encourage a healthy lifestyle, you are as protected from illnesses, including the flu, as you can be. Hopefully you and your family will avoid the flu this season!
