The Right Sport May Keep You Healthy
By Tom Herrin
When you are trying to do what you can to improve and/or maintain your health, it can be a greater challenge than you may anticipate. There are lots of people who get out and get into some kind of exercise program. The problem is that too many of them fail. This may not be so much due to the fact that they are unable to do whatever it is as much as it is that they just cannot keep themselves motivated. It is a pretty common problem for any of us. In order to avoid this issue from creating a roadblock for your program, engaging in lifetime sports may be a good option.
Why Lifetime Sports?
There are all kinds of sports. Many of us participated in something as children. The notion of lifetime sports is that, in order for us to form good habits of physical activity, we will probably be more successful if we do something we enjoy. On top of that, many of us get a lot more excited when we have a little competition. A goal of achieving something, or at least improving our abilities, can give us something to shoot for. Very few of us respond to something for which we have no incentive.
Set Goals
A general recommendation for exercise is that everyone should strive to get at least 30 minutes per day for five days per week of moderate physical activity. Even though we may need to start slow and mild, most of us can make reasonably good progress in a short period of time. At one time, I found that I was unable to get out and ride my bicycle as much as I felt like I should. Too many times, I would pass on it completely if I was not able to do it. After a while, I realized that even 10 minutes on an exercise bike could provide me with a decent amount of activity.
Decide How Far You Want to Go
You may be one of those who is completely satisfied with something that is pretty much a slow-paced activity. That is fine. It is better than nothing. The main thing is to do something you enjoy and will continue doing. Whether it is bowling, golfing, playing some kind of team sport like basketball or soccer, it really doesn't matter. You are looking for something that motivates you. If you have that, success with follow.
