Location and Color of Fat Are Significant

By Tom Herrin

When any of us attempt to make an assessment of the condition of our bodies in terms of fat, we probably use the mirror as our first guide.  Beyond that, we may do a quick review of how our clothes fit.  We may use the bathroom scales as well, but none of these may actually tell us how much fat we have and whether or not it is good or bad fat.  If we increase our understanding of fat, we may be better able to effectively manage our own health as it relates to fat.

Red Fish, Blue Fish, You Know

Many of us likely are not aware that fat has several possible colors.  Knowing the colors can give us an idea of what they do.  Obviously we won't see them, but if we know a little about them, and their location, we may be able to manage our own health a little better.  The most common color we recognize is white fat.  It is the kind we associate with obesity and health problems.  Brown fat is what we may refer to as baby fat as they have more of it than adults.  It is the one that can help us to stay warm.  Beige fat is one that we seem to be able to burn rather than store.  Some white fat may be turned to beige when we are under some kind of stress.

Belly Fat

By now, most of us know that belly fat is trouble.  The more of it we see, the worse it can be for our health.  It is a type of white fat that accumulates in our middle.  Some people even believe it may function as an organ on its own.  It seems to contribute to strokes, heart and arterial diseases, and some cancers.  We want to make every effort to keep this type of fat off.  If we have too much, it is time to think about serious diet and exercise changes.

There Are Some Good Fats

Besides some of the good things mentioned above, some parts of our bodies need fat.  The brain must have fat.  The nerves and bone marrow also need it.  Some of our organs need fat to serve as a sort of cushion to protect them from injury.  We may not be able to determine where we have it, but we sure don't want to deprive ourselves of this kind.
