How to Start Your Day on a Positive Note

For me, it’s inexplicably difficult to wake up in a cheerful, peppy mood. I am most definitely one of those people who needs a cup of coffee and at least an hour of solitude before I would consider myself ready to interact with other people. However, I know that there are plenty of people out there who wake up in the morning feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and ready to conquer their days. And so I’m assuming that I am not alone when I ask, what is their secret? How do some people spend the first parts of their days humming and skipping and enjoying the view of the birds out the window while others (myself included) commiserate a bit with Dr. Jekyll during the morning hours? While there isn’t an exact science behind it, there are some ways to boost your mood in the AM hours. Here are a few good ones:

#1: Wake up with some positive thoughts.

When you first open your eyes in the morning, it’s pretty easy to immediately start making a mental tally of all of the various things you have to get done during the next twelve hours or so. This can be stressful, which is clearly not a relaxing or enjoyable way to begin your morning. Instead, try to make your first few thoughts pleasant- think about the things that you can do throughout the course of the day that will be fun and/or rejuvenating for you. Make a mental note to take a nice walk during your lunch break or to pick up the ingredients for your favorite dinner. Positive thoughts will make for a positive start to your day!

#2: Eat a good and well-balanced breakfast.

Even if coffee (which actually has been known to elevate your mood on its own) is generally your only source of fuel before lunch, consider eating a little something for breakfast. A mix of carbohydrates and protein will give you a sufficient amount of energy in order to stay alert and productive until lunchtime. Some good (and light) options are a bowl of oatmeal with walnuts and sliced strawberries, a couple of scrambled eggs with a piece of whole grain toast, or a bowl of plain yogurt with berries and pumpkin seeds.

#3: Take a few deep breaths of fresh air.

One of the very best ways to begin your day on a healthy and energized note is to spend a few minutes outside. You don’t need to leave your yard, either. Just step outside (with your cup of hot coffee, perhaps) and breathe in the fresh, crisp morning air. Besides your energy levels, being outdoors can also help to boost your mood.
