Is Your Core Weak?

By Sara Butler

When you have core strength, it does more than simply help you to look good during swimsuit season. Core strength is also essential to the health of your spine. But how do you know if you need to work on your core strength or not? Here are some things the chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic suggest you be on the lookout for to know if your core strength is up to snuff or not.

The Signs of Weak Core Muscles

So, how do you know if your core strength needs a tune-up? There are a few signs you should be on the lookout for. These include:

  • Holding your breath - Do you find yourself holding your breath when you do core-targeting exercises at the gym?
  • You back hurts - If your back hurts when you work out, such as when you walk or go jogging, then that could be a sign of a weak core
  • Building strength is difficult - If you have a difficult time building strength in general when you work out, then that could be a sign
  • You slouch or hunch your shoulders - A strong core allows you to practice good posture. If you have weak core muscles, then that could be a sign your core muscles aren't up to the proper posture task.
  • You have digestive issues - Frequent digestive issues such as constipation can also be a sign of a weak core
  • You use your arms a lot - Do you have to use your arms to go from standing to sitting or vice versa? Or do you need to roll to get up from a position laying down?
  • You lack balance - If you can't balance on one leg or have trouble walking on uneven terrain, then that can be a sign of a weak core

What You Can Do

Whipping your core into shape isn't as difficult as you may think -- it's not as if you need to work out like actors who portray superheroes and need abs of steel. Instead, adding in a few simple core exercises can make a difference. Try these out:

  • Planks
  • Burpees

You can always modify these moves to meet you where you're at, so you can start off slow and build strength as needed.

The chiropractors at The Joint are also always available to help you out. All you need to do is talk to them about how you can work to improve your core strength!
