Progress Your Health With Pumpkin

By Brandi Goodman

Pumpkin carving is a common fall practice. Too many discard the insides with no regard for the benefits pumpkin can bring. It's more than just a decoration for your front porch. Pumpkin can progress your health due to all the nutrition it provides.

Feeling the Fiber

The fiber found in pumpkin can help your digestive tract. Enjoy just one cup of pumpkin and you'll get around 2.7 grams of the nutrient. Fiber also helps you feel full so you don't get hungry so soon after eating. Pair fiber with protein for an even longer-lasting full feeling. Pumpkin spice roasted chickpeas are a great option for this.

Losing Weight

Pumpkin is low in calories just like many fruits and vegetables. There's only 49 calories in one cup. You may not eat pumpkin plain, but such low calories won't do much when added to an already low-calorie meal. You'll want to stick to recipes like this when losing weight. Coming in at 300 calories, a serving of pumpkin turkey kale chili is a great meal option.

Seeing Clearly

Your vision may improve with pumpkin. You can start seeing more clearly and prevent age-related eye disease due to the Vitamin A that's included in the orange vegetable-like fruit. Vitamin A is a known supporter of eye health. A pumpkin and carrot soup serves as an excellent meal option when trying to improve your eyes.

Enhancing Muscle Function

Potassium helps with muscle function. Say you're having regular muscle cramps. You'll be encouraged to add potassium to your diet. A banana is usually the chosen source, but plenty of others exist as well. Pumpkin is on that list. Enhance your muscle function and get more energy by adding pumpkin to your diet.

Carving is Exercise

Pumpkin provides more than just nutrition. The act of carving actually counts as exercise. The more pumpkins you carve, the more exercise you'll be getting this fall. It's a great arm workout. All the time spent designing the perfect creation and forcing the blade into the thick skin will have you building muscle and burning calories.

Enjoy pumpkin recipes throughout the fall season and boost your health. The pumpkin and its seeds are equally beneficial to consume. Don't forget to keep the inside of your carving shell and use the natural pumpkin rather than store-bought purees that have added ingredients.
