Kick Up Your Kidney Health With These Tips

By Brandi Goodman

Your kidneys are necessary for filtering waste within your body. Without them, your body wouldn't get the amount of nutrients or blood cells it needs. With more than a third of U.S. adults at risk for developing kidney disease, it's more important than ever to start doing what you can to boost their health. Kick up your kidney health with these tips.

Drink Lots of Water

Water is necessary for helping your kidneys function well. You need to drink lots of water if you want your kidneys to filter waste as intended. Failing to do so can result in a build-up of toxins within your body. Your blood vessels open better and allow nutrients to flow more freely to your kidneys when you drink plenty of water.

Stop Smoking

Smoking only brings more toxins to your body. Your kidneys can become damaged as they work overtime attempting to eliminate all that's being brought in. Stop smoking if you hope to reduce the damage and ensure your kidneys no longer have to work so hard to filter toxins as intended.

Improve Your Diet

The foods you eat also play a role in kidney health. If you drink soda pop -- especially kinds that are dark in color -- you're increasing the amount of phosphorus and other additives in your body. It can increase the salt in your system, which is bad for your heart and kidneys. You need to drink water and eat foods that are healthy, such as whole grains, fish, vegetables, and fruit.

Get More Exercise

High blood pressure can be a major concern if you have kidney troubles. Get more exercise to help lower your blood pressure and work to filter fat out of your blood. Your kidneys will function much better once you start exercising regularly and getting other areas of health under control.

Avoid Pain Pills

Much of the over-the-counter medication you can take for pain can do damage to your kidneys. Sure, taking it every once in a while is alright, but regular use can do far more harm than you might realize. Avoid taking pain pills if you can help it and look for more natural solutions if possible.

Do everything you can to keep your kidneys healthy and strong. Poor kidney health can lead to other problems. You need to maintain your well-being any way possible.
